turn down after muffler??

I have an 86 F-150 with a 302 FI. I recently had muffler shop install a single in/out flowmaster 40 series muffler (with the exit behind the rear tire). This combo did not give me the exhuast tone I was expecting (deep/rumble).

If I cut the tail pipe off and run a short turn down pipe out of the back of the muffler (may be leave 12" of straight pipe the a turn down piece around the axle), will this make it louder/deeper. Will it sound good? Will it cause any power/torque loss.

Thanks for the help!!

If you point the turndown toward the ground, it should sound louder due to the sound bouncing off of the pavement.

You could also try one of those big long exhaust tips. These act like a mega phone.

Just my thoughts.

302's arent going to be loud unless you mess with your cats. Put some hi flo cats on then flomasters with dual tail pipes out the back with big tips, then you WILL have sound.
