exhaust
I am looking at installing Gibson dual exhaust out the rear on my 2003 5.4L Supercrew. I have seen messages about interferences with the spare tire. Can anyone confirm??? Is there any other issues with installation???
If you have 16" wheels, you'll be fine with Gibson.
Borla, Magnaflow, and Flowmaster DOR systems work with 17" wheels. A shop should be able make a custm system for you. Magnaflow sells just the 2.5" mandrel bent dual tail pipes for about $80 that you could use with any muffler and tips you choose.

I do have 17" wheels. I was looking for a system that was simple to install, and did not require going to an exhaust shop to install or having to custom make. The Gibson seemed to be pretty simple to install, provided a nice tone, and offered some additional HP. This is what lored me to them. I don't want a system that shakes the vehical, but rather gives a nice sound. I think I will look into the other systems you mentioned. I would like to leave the spare alone. I would also like to keep $$$ for this system around $350 - $450. If you have any preference from the three you mentioned I would appreciate the info. Also, I was looking at aluminized vs. Stainless steel. With the Gibson system the difference was about $120. I figured I could buy pretty nice tips for $120. Any suggestion on Alum. vs. Stainless? Thanks for all your help.
Here is the main features that the vehical has:
2003 F150 XLT Supercrew
5.4 L engine
FX4 off road package
Class III towing package
17" tires

I do not know how easily the dual systems bolt up becuase you need extra hangers for the left tailpipe. It would seem as though you need to weld the hanger to the body/frame somewhere. But I haven't seen any of the kits in person so I can't say for sure how they handle this. It may be worth calling Mike Troyer to find out how Magnaflow does it. Their dual system is very new, as in I think one person on here has it on their F-150.
Cost wise, Magnaflow and Flowmaster are in that range, but Borla is over $600 everywhere I looked for the DOR. Everyone has their own preference, but I would pick Magnaflow over Flowmaster any day. Their quality is better, their performance is better, and IMHO they sound better. But a lot of people like how Flowmaster sounds which is the only reason why they sell so well.
Aluminized vs. stainless: There are proponents of both. Obviously, you save money in the short term. If you don't plan to have your truck very long, save the money. Here is my personal experience. I had a 99 F-150 and put 69k miles on it, and the OEM stainless exhaust was still looking good through 4 winters of road salt. Check out some new (02+ style) Dodge Ram trucks. In the Detroit area, they are rusting already. Now, much of it may be surface rust which just looks bad, but it isn't going to last anywhere near as long as an F-150 with stainless pipes. The question is will it last long enough for you? However, Most people never see anything but the tips which are generally polished stainless steel.
If it were my truck, I would order the Magnaflow DOR system from either Mike T, or Full Line Exhaust. It is stainless, in your price range, will work with the spare and hitch receiver, looks and sounds good.
Nice truck, BTW. I have almost the same now. 03 Supercrew, 5.4L, FX4 17", class III hitch.

I have an 02 SuperCrew that I put the Flowmaster cat back kit on. Minimal interference with the 17" spare. The bracket for the left side tailpipe is bolted to an existing hole on the frame, it does not need to be welded as indiacted in a previous post. I did much research into the Flowmaster vs Magnflow choice. At the time I did my upgrade, Magnflow did not have a a dual tailpipe kit. The SS kit had a 4" pipe out the right side. I did not want my truck to look like a Dodge Cummins so I went with Flowmaster.
Very happy with performance and ease of install and sound. Only took about 2 hrs. Flowmaster has to 2 kits, 17226 angled pipes at rear corners and 17222 straight pipes out the back that clear class III hitch. Possibly available in SS in the future. Cost @ $325 at SummitRacing.Com
