Question is it illegal not to have tail pipes??

do i have to have tailpipes? or can i just have the factory muffler replaced and have it dump out directly from the muffler?

I'm guessing that it depends on your local laws. In this state the exhaust has to exit out from underneath the body anywhere rearward of the passenger compartment, or just behind the cab on our trucks.

Good luck.

AFAIK, the exhaust just has to extend past the passenger compartment. I have a POS Chevy that I use for getting to my hunting land and I just have a muffler dumping out under the truck before the rear axle. It passes inspection this way too. I am in VA, your state may be different.
