89 inline 6 dual exhaust

geltlemen,
as you probably know, ive been looking into getting the heartthrob cat back system for my truck for quite some time now. i called JC Whitney and they said it wont fit on my truck because i have the two gas tanks. my question here is just to varify what they are sayingm will it not work with the 2 tanks? and onto my other options. i really want a dual exhaust on my truck (see signature). even though its only a 6, i want that throaty v8 sound. i know i wont get that exact sound, but i want to come as close as possible. what would you guys recomend? im looking for a dual exhaust cat back for my six that will sound as close to a v8 as possible. ive looked into gibson, summit, Flowmaster, jegs, and things like that. in looking for a system that splits into 2 pipes at the exit of the muffler and exits at the back of the truck under the bumper. i just need some other input. oh yeah, im keeping the first cat and getting a hi flow second cat.
thanks, john

Thumbs up

They're not cheap, but Clifford Performance has dual outlet headers for your application, I'm almost certain of it. After you get one of these, buy the mufflers of your choice and have a local shop bend you something custom fitted for your truck. I have a 1965 Falcon 6 cyl. that someone had Y'd off after the engine and dualed out. It does almost have that V-8 sound. Maybe a dualed V-6 sound but hey, it doesn't sound like straight 6 now? Make sure the exhaust shop doesn't go too big on your pipes, and you should be okay torque wise. Clifford also has all kinds of other hotrod L6 parts. Like I said, pricey though,,,,98

And yes, the Falcon kept low end after this was done. It gets rubber in first gear, impressive if you ask me. 200 6 engines were never known to be powerhouses,,,,98

Well going with a dual exhaust without a split header would be a sound and appearance only thing IMO. Check out magnaflows' site, they have a nice Y pipe that would get the job done, then add whatever mufflers you want. If two mufflers seems a little redundant, then you could buy a single in, dual out muffler in the size you need. Then all you'd need to do is get someone to bend it to fit. In any case, I would talk to the shop you plan to use first, before you spend the money. Just to make sure it can be done. The big guys probably didn't make a system, simply because the demand may not have been that high for a cat back on that specific style truck. It sucks but it's a fact of the aftermarket industry. Unless you have enough vehicles running the road with the exact same engine/body/chassis combo, they just don't spend the money researching it.,,,,,98

Death Rowe,

I had a 91 F150 with y pipe behind the cat and dualed out to the back of the truck with no muffs on it. It sounded really awesome at low RPm but anything beyond 2500 RPM started to sound alittle ricey almost like a 4 banger kinda. I would reccomend running muffs on the 6cyl Fords. Muffs just give a deeper more agressive sound and more V8 like sound and power. Like 98 said, Check out Magnaflow as they do make good products and we stock them at our exhaust shop where I work.

www.magnaflow.com

Another setup that would sound bada$$ would be a true dual setup. Obviously your truck being a I6 that it is, it only has 1 huge manifold on there. I dunno about yours, but on my 91, the manifold had 2 head pipes coming into the preheater/cat/ and a huge 3 1/2" pipe into the second cat SI/SO on the second cat. What you could do is this. I"m no artist but this is what I'm talking about.

II - 2 head pipes from manifold
() - new high flow DI/DO Cat
II
II
II
() () - 2 muffs of your choice, Flows, Mags, or even glasspacks
II
V V - with tips(optional)

Like I said, if your truck doesn't have the 2 head pipes from the manifold, this setup is out of the question.

Or just a go with good cat back with a SI/DO muffler. Good deep sound and really nice sound level. Just enough to get your attn but not obnoxious either.

Something else you can do is replace your stock muff with a glasspack and y it out from there out the back. Like this

() - stock rear cat or high flow
I
I
()- glasspack muff
I
Y dual into 2 pipes
II
II
V V - optional tips.

So your not in the woods and you have alot of options to go with. I would reccomend muffs or it will sound like a 4 banger at higher RPM. Good luck,,,91
