Exhaust

I have a 97 F-150 with a 4.6 . I am looking at replacing the exhaust. I am pretty much hooked on the flowmaster. I just really like the sound. I have a 94 Mustang GT. I cleaned the cats and put in H-pipe and Flows, and left the stock tips. It sounds great. The sound is what I am after. I would like to make the truck sound as close to the car as possible.

What I am thinking about is taking out the Y and putting in an X pipe, 40 series flows, and dual exhaust exiting out in front of the R/R tire. Currently exits behind the rear.

My dad has a 98 with the 4.6 and has dual flows exiting in the rear. It sounds OK but I would like something a little more aggressive. I have an agrressive looking truck and it needs an aggressive sound.

Any Suggestions.

You will not get the same sound. Different engine. THe 5.0L vs. the 4.6L are very different, and even so, the 4.6L in the newer Mustangs will sound different than the F-150.

Your idea is fine to replace the factory y-pipe, use and x-pipe and dual 40 series Flowmaster mufflers. Run the tips whereever you'd like. If you put the both out the right side, you won't hear it as much fro mthe driver's side.

I realize that the motors are different. The 5.0 comes with more performance parts: cam, headers, etc. What I am trying to accomplish is getting a tough sound w/out having to do the cam, headers, etc. I don't want just flows and tips because everyone does that. I want something that sounds a little different and sounds good. Loud, but not too loud.

I just don't want to overdue it. Thanks for the comments.

If you want loud, but not too loud, go with teh Flowmaster 50 series three chamber (Delta). It is quiet, but loudens up after a couple weeks of driving. It's so loud, now that I am actually thinking of installing Bassani or Magnaflow or Borla in its place. I wanted to upgrade to stainless steel also. If you get the intake and chip, the exhaust will liven up even more.

I would get a small Magnaflow muffler. Way different that any Flowmaster, and IMO a much nicer tone and better quality. Should get better performance as well. X-pipe and two 14" 2.5" mufflers, then 2.25" tail pipes to whatever tips you like.

Here is a sample of a Lightning with Magnaflow. Pardon the supercharger whine.
