to cut? or not to cut?

hey ya'll i have a 4.2 6er xlt super cab.

i want to know if i simply cut off my OEM muffler and replace it with straight pipe leaving only the cats. will this sound ok ?
if it will sound bad i will just leave it alone and not do anything

my goal is a little sound and better gas milage for basicaly no money.
and yes i know about all the BETTER things i can do for my truck but frankly i just dont care enough to spend the money on it.

if theres any chance that it will sound like one of those dumb azz rice bunenrs we got running around town with tehre wind up toy sounding mufflers i DONT want to do it . but if it will sound atleast ok and improve my milage a bit i would like to give it a shot.
any info would be great

i would like to do this tonight or tromorrow if at all. so info in a hurry would be appriciated

Well...
Not quite rice.. but not so nice either....
you remember how those late 80's early 90's chevy v6 camaros, barettas and such sounded.. kinda raspy and gay.... well that is what you will end up with....

sorry but even a glass pack doesnt do much to cure the 6 sound without a real muffler... I should know.. I put a glass pack on mine then had it replaced...

good luck

I dunno. I am removing my cats and figured if I'm gonna run straight pipe to the muffler I would throw a glass pack between it if it would beef up my sound.

I've heard the 4.2 without a muffler. Personally, I think it sounds horrible. I know you made it clear that you don't want to spend money (join the club!) but if you buy just an aftermarket muffler, not a whole cat-back setup, and have it welded in place of your OEM it really won't cost that much. I've been considering it myself because I have heard some people are getting an additional 1-2MPG after doing so.
