Hi JDm

Changing the Y pipe is one of the best things you can do to your truck (in my opinion). I also have a flowmaster 40 series si/do, i had 3" pipe added from the Y back to the muffler, it gave the exhaust a deeper sound,i also picked up a noticable amount low and mid range power, as well as better gas mileage.

I hope this helps.

Larry.

Where is the "Y" pipe located? Is this the section which is after the second cat and approx 3' from the input side of the muffler?
This section of plumbing on my truck appears to be 1/4-1/2" smaller then the 3" FM I did (SI/DO).
Who did you have do this work? What did it cost with the purchase of the Y from FM?
Thanks very much for your help. We both are in the Bay Area and I am also having trouble finding someone who can/will do this.

Hi JDm

I had a local muffler shop install my Y pipe.
They charged me 50 dollars to install the y and run the 3" pipe back to the muffler, the instalation took about an hour.

Hope this helps.

Hey Larry:
This is Pete N - I need some more info on the Y pipe.
Location (is it the section approx. 3' before the input to the muffler)?
What was the name of the muffler shop which did the work - I work over near the East Bay and could probably get in there.
Any help here?

If they tell you it looks complex, run and find a qualified person. I paid $50 and took them a mandrel bent 90 degree pipe for the driver's side pipe modification.

Hi Pete N

The y is were the left exhaust pipe is joined to the right exhaust pipe, the exhaust pipe comming from the left side is reduced down from 2.50 to 2.25 inches before it is welded together at the y, but the hole in the right side pipe is only 1.75" inches around. So you have a 2.50 pipe reduced down to 2.25 that is welded over a 1.75 inch hole,
Thats why the Y pipe is such a restriction and needs to be replaced. Once you have yours replaced, look at the old y and you will see what im talking about.

Ihope this helps.

The name of the muffler shop that installed my Y pipe is MEL&SONS 12432 San Pablo AVE Richmond, Phone# 510-233-8484. They do good work.

Thanks again for the feedback. You dont happen to have any pictures showing this do you? My '97 has a cat on the right (closer to the engine) (fed via the right side manifold) and a cat on the left closer to the middle of the truck. There is what I would describe as an H pipe which leaves the first cat and goes into the second. There is a single output from the second cat straight into (about 3' away) the input to the muffle. I cant see where the Flowmaster Y pipe would fit in this configuration. Matter of fact, I dont see where it goes at all.

I don`t know how to discribe it any better,
the Y is were both pipes are welded together.
There is a picture in this post, go to this thread by Jackal--need y pipe advice ASAP there is a picture of the new y pipe, this picture might help you, or give you an idea as to were it goes.

I hope this help .

The gut wrenching & hand wringing over this issue cracks me up. Just go to a competent exhaust shop & get it done. It is well documented on thes pages that it works.
