Post flames out of the exhaust

here's a question that ou don't see every day. a friend of mine wants to make flames come out of his exhaust tips (1979 F-250, highly modified 300ci engine, 4 barrel holley carb, no cats, no mufflers, straight pipes). we've already tried with no success. has anyone in here done something like this? heres the setup we already tried:

-wire from the battery to a toggle switch
-wire from the toggle switch to a coil
-from the coil to a spark plug drilled into one of the exhaust pipes
-carb running rich so theres unburnt fuel in the exhaust

we got it to work a few times, but it would only light for a sec or two, then the flame would die and not light again. we are sure theres plenty of fuel going out the exhaust, and the plugs are not getting fouled or anything. we think that its a spark problem, but we cannot be sure. if you pull out the spark plugs from the pipes, you can see that the plugs are lighting. has anyone tried something like this? any suggestions are appreciated, because we are running out of ideas, thanks...

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......

Fuel, heat, oxygen. Seems like you have plenty of the first two. Where is your friend's spark plug located in the exhaust?

My understanding on this subject is that you need to get a propane tank and rig in the propane similar to how you have done the spark plug. Then your need to be able to regulate the flow of propane to the amount of exhaust gases so that you have enough propane to produce a flame that will stay lit once it has been egnited by the spark plug. LEt us know how it works

If you are running rich enough you won't need to use a propane tank. I think the spark is the problem also. Do you have the plugs near the end of the exhaust or farther upstream?

Making a carburated vehicle shoot flames is no problem infact i think jcwhitney carries them. However i have never seen a kit for EFI engines. Who sells the propane kits?

it is about 1 foot from the tip of the exhaust. should it be closer to the engine? we figured this would be good distance because flames running through most of the exhaust pipes cant be good. you guys think that canging the gap of the plug would help at all? any ideas? thanks for all the replies. we dont need the propane tank in our setup because the carb is running plenty rich. jackal, ive seen that kit before, and ive seen many other kits but my friend wants to figure this one out without purchasing a kit. thanks for all the help guys, and keep those ideas coming!

I'd probably put the plugs closer to the end of the exhaust pipes that way oxygen will be readily available. Just a thought.

Definately...it's too starved for oxygen to make a good flame that will stay lit for any period of time. Move them to about 3" in, from the tip.

Ive heard that you need to rev the engine up and cut the ignition to the engine and keep your foot on the gas and let it "freewheel" and light up your plugs in the pipes. Seen it on TV

Did this with a friends '54 Merc back in HS with the help of an old street rodder who was doing it in the 50's. The plugs were on the end of the pipe and he drilled sone small holes upstream of the system to "tune the mixture". We got a constant 4' flame at WOT.

A friend of mine did this to his 83 Chevy. He first started my cuting the Cats off. I am not sure what else he did, but it looked awesome.
