Angry Chrome and Rust...

I've been wondering about this since late winter when I first noticed. I had a custom exhaust put on my truck in mid-October. After a winter of driving on salt/snow roads in the north GA mountains, I have noticed rust on my 3" tips ( duals straight out the back ). Is there anything that will take this off? Am i screwed?

It's not that noticable, but as any truck owner would concur.. it stands out like a sore thumb. Thanks in advance.

Try a chrome cleaner like Mothers or Turtle wax and a little elbow grease. Last resort option steel wool in 0000 or higher/finer.

KYFordFreak,

Thanks for such a quick response!

Just to be clear, Mothers/Turtle Wax make a specific chrome cleaner, or can I use the wax product to get rid of the rust? I have some Turtle Wax if that'll work.

Again, thanks.

Cool

Try spraying some WD-40 onto the rust. It will break it down if it's just on the surface. That's what I use on my tools...table saw, jointer, hand tools, etc.

Cool

Also, it is a more expensive solution, but you may just want to replace the tips with Stainless Steel.

Howdy!

More reasons to go with polished stainless steel. $110 per tip?! Sure is worth it..

Have a polished day.

My ride:

Basics:
- '99 XLT F-150

Under hood and back:
- Ram air (Don't ask me how )
- AiRaid intake
- Flowmaster DF 50 Series
- 24x3.5" Stainless steel slashed tips (Yes! Solid polished SS, no cheesy chrome-plated)
...

Outside:
- Precision polished billet grille and plate holders
- American Racing 17x8s polished Pythons (Flushed front AND back)
- Goodyear.. something tires (Expensive is all I know. LOL. No Firestone firecrackers for me either)
- Rhino liner
- Ford nerf bars
- Ford bed rails
...

Inside:
- My girlfriend!
...

Fun stuff:
- Dual sirens Black Widow alarm system/keyless entry (Enough decibels to go deaf in a garage )
- Custom driving lights (Just a cool blue)
- 2 High-Watt lights behind grille (For people who cut me off )
- Dual horns (For people who, again, cut me off)
- Dual wheel locks (So I won't be driving home on bricks!)
- Spare wheel lock (So I won't have to use a brick as a spare )
...

Best of all:
- Texas A&M University aTm front plate! Gig'em Aggies!!

TheClear55,

To clean your chrome tips use an SOS pad or iron wool. I would not use the stuff made by turtle wax until I cleaned them gently with the iron wool or SOS pad.

Well it started raining again today, so I haven't had a chance to try out these great tips from you all. When it clears up enough, I will let you all know how it turns out.

Thanks again!

Lean N Cut is right. Stainless is expensive but it's well worth it.

Silver SCrew,

Stainless Steel is definately the best way to go. But for short term, I am going to try and clean them up a bit. Makes me wonder why I didn't ask you all about it BEFORE I had the chrome tips put on. Lesson learned. F150 Online comes first

Cool

Try Coke and Aluminum Tin Foil. Just pour the coke on let it set a few seconds and scrub with the tin foil. Works great, I've used it numerous times on my chrome exhaust tips on my galaxy. It's quick, easy and very inexpensive.
