Post A Fact Finding on Flowmaster Just for You Guys!

My friend who owns a muffler shop here in the Dallas area, phoned me today to say that he had an '01 S'Crew on the rack and was in the process of installing a custom built catback system. Perfect timing, my business was unusually slow today! I grabbed the keys and was out the door.

I've been catching heck from him about ordering a Borla system. This was an opportunity to hear first hand what the Flow's sound like and I did take a pad/pen to make notes for you guys.

I got to spend a great deal of time walking around underneath the S'Crew. Here is the system he built.

The truck: 4x4, ORP, 5.4, automatic, factory receiver hitch

*Flowmaster Delta 50 3 chamber muffler - Part #9430502
*3 " diameter inlet
*Dual 2.5" diameter outlets
*2.25" diameter aluminized tailpipes run out the back
*3" overall diameter chrome tips, 2.25" inlet, approximately 16" long, slash cut, inner rolled tip

My amigo does beautiful work, this welded system was gorgeous. Standing at the rear of the truck at idle I was impressed with the sound, not loud, not quiet, it was just right for these ears, muscular sounding if you will. Jump down on it from a dead stop and it will get your attention but the sound is much more music than annoying. The same can be said for hitting passing gear at speed. I detected no drone on the highway, regardless of RPM's. Matter of fact, once the automatic tranny shifted into fourth the sound from the rear fell off to just above stock. Sure you could tell that the stock muffler was history and some exhaust work had been done but it was in absolutely no way loud at highway speed, only a few decibels above stock. Wind noise was more of a factor than exhaust noise.

The customer specifically wanted the 2.25" inlet chrome tips otherwise the shop would have opted for 2.5" tailpipes with 3.5" diameter chrome tips.

Personally, I thought the 3" tips were a little small, the 3.5" should be just right.
Cost of the system they installed is $325 at his shop, the slightly larger tailpipes and tips would increase the price a tad.

Question

Zach,

Does your buddy know anyone in the Houston area that is comparable? It is a bit of a lon trek for me to drive up to Dallas, living in the Woodlands. Unless he wants to give me a real deal for the advertising

The system that you describe sounds like exactly like what I want (with the recommendation for the larger tips).

Thanks,

Chuck

Zach,

Just had the same exact set-up put on my truck. Its not a screw but a 00` Supercab with the 5.4L. It was a replacement for a FM40 si/so set-up that my wife complained was too noisy.
The sound is exactly as you described and the wife evn now approves. Only problem we had was one side came a little close to the hitch corner on exit due to the wider tip but he was able to bend the pipe a little to make it right. Install took about an hr and 15 min but was well worth it.
I also highly recommend this set-up with the FM50 Delta. Buddy just picked up a Screw 2 weeks ago and after hearing mine made a appt. for next Mon for his install!!

IMUD - He has no affiliates in Houston and I doubt seriously it would be worth your time and money to drive up here, but I'm sure he will appreciate you asking. I posted merely for the edification of my fellow members online here. Of course if someone living in the Dallas area wants contact information on the shop I will be more than happy to provide it. (zach1955@aol.com) My reason for posting was to possibly help someone wanting info on Flows, there are so many continuing new threads with questions on exhaust. I would think your best bet would be to copy down the description of the system and find a local shop there to do it. I'm sure there are several competent muffler shops in your area.

2000FordStyle....That's a great point, for those F150online brethren who have significant others, this setup should please the ears of wives/girlfriends too. Going to the 3.5" tip on the system build I witnessed today would not have posed a problem with the trailer hitch. I guess it all depends on the angle, bend and positioning of the tailpipes. My friend is an artist with a pipe bender and welding torch.

That is also my exact setup back to the chrome tips where I opted for the 3.5" The sound is mellow but aggressive when heard from behind. It is difficult to hear from inside the cab though.

Although I haven't heard a 40, I would prefer a tad bit more sound. Exhaust notes are so subjective but I think the 50 is just a tad bit to quite.

Zach,
Thank's for the info. This is the system that I'm going to go with except for 2.5" tail's
& 3.5" slashcut's on mine.
I was looking into ravin & got sick of trying to chase down answer's from the midas shop's around here. Everyone has something different to say, some have never heard of it & 1 midas mgr. told me not to even bother.I got really tired of listening to the midas guy's tell me about how quiet the z33 in & how loud the z55 & z77 are. It's pretty sad when you have to explain their product to them about which is louder than the other . One manager was going to check into it for me and said he was going to get back to me & never did.I'm sure it's a great sounding system just a little frustrating.
Thank's again for the great info.
Sorry for the ramblin post, but I feel much better now.

Fallscrew....I understand your frustrations, it's bad enough that they don't know their product, but to promise a call back to a potential customer and not follow thru is even worse. Be sure and post your impressions of the Flowmaster once your system is installed!

AHHHHHH, it's post like this that make me keep going back and forth. Should I get Flows (40's), Ravin's (Z-33) or just straights? That question has been going through my mind almost 24/7 (well not 24/7, but a lot). I'll just get something and be happy with it I guess or just forget it all, nah couldn't do that.

Cool

Just go straights, and add the mufflers if you don't like it. Then you won't waste any money on mufflers if you don't want them..

I got the real deal flowmasters. They come straight off the headers, with two catalytic converters. They are true duals, the two exhaust pipes never come together. They added a lot of power, and they have a really great sound, a lot deeper and more throaty than a normal flowmaster set up. It cost a pretty penny but it was worth it.

I never expected to be writing this update BUT I too was taken in by the lifted skirt and perfumed inner thigh of the Flowmaster setup. Today, I took the truck to my friends shop and had him work his magic on the S'Crew. I have never been able to forget the rumble of the exhaust on the XLT I wrote about at the beginning of this thread. However, I did opt for the 2.5" diameter tailpipes and 3.5" diameter slash cut, rolled tip chrome tips. It sounds awesome to these 45 year old ears!

I'm ordering my flowmaster today.
I'm not sure if I should run 2.25" tail's or 2.5" tail's.I heard the torque loss would be less with the 2.25 tail's .I'm going with the 3.5 tip's though.
Could you give me your opinion or ask your buddy his opinion for me. Please!
Did you notice any low end loss with the 2.5" tail's or is this something I should'nt be concerned about.

Howdy Fallscrew..
Frankly, I haven't noticed any loss in low end torque and the computer has not even had time to compensate for the change. I do plan on clearing the computer when I put the K&N FIPK on, hopefully this weekend.
I already know what the friend of mine (aka Muffler God) thinks about the 2.25" vs. 2.50" on our trucks, go with the 2.5". The customers exhaust I reviewed at the beginning of this thread had 2.25" tails because the customer wanted it done that way. He also wanted 3" diameter tips which, in the opinion of Muffler God, is too small. I have to agree, the 3.5" are much better suited to our trucks. Fallscrew, be sure and consider the slash cut, rolled tips, they look great.

Zach,
Once again thank's for the info.
I'm doing the 3" slash cut's but they are not rolled. My muffler dude does'nt carry the rolled version, but slashes are a must.
I talked to him on the phone & he said 2.25 or 2.5 depending on how much room there is to route it.I'm not sure how your's is routed but it seem's there is enough room to me for the 2.5" .
Have you had a chance to drive it alot to see if there is any drone on your's with the 2.5" tail's ?
It will probably go under the torch next week sometime & I'm kind of excited about it (unlike my wife,go figure,Hey!).
If you can shed any light on the routing I would appreciate it.
Off the subject of flow's and onto tire's & rim's what are you doing for a spare since you switched to the 285/75/16's ?
I'm still trying to decide if I want to take that plunge or not.
Thank's again
Mike
