Everyone loves their aftermarket exhaust system
Well, is their anyone out there who has recommendations on what system NOT to buy?
Just like lots of other readers, I want to upgrade. But just about everyone likes the cool new exhaust on their truck. It sounds great and the truck is more responsive. Wether it's a Gibson, Borla, Flowmaster, Ravin, or whatever.
Is their anyone who doesn't like the exhaust they have? Or anyone who would do it differently if they had it to do over again.
By the way, after getting my new truck (01 SC FS), my wife said, "why don't you get one of those cool sounding mufflers"!!! She never ceases to amaze me!

i bot a f/m d/50 si/do for my 4.6l before discovering this site. i think i would have gotten a ravin muffler if i had read earlier posts. the f/m is ok--lost some low-end torque--the sound is non-obtrusive. a chip will "fix" the torque problem though. dan

Thanks for the info lightinrod. Where did your dual out exit at, on the side or out the back?

I also went with a true dual setup, but I
added 24" glasspacks. I didn't realize it
would sound this good. Unlike nvr enuff, I
really didn't notice that much of a loss on
the low end. I was also wondering about the
H pipe, but is there enough room between the
two exhaust pipes to even put an H pipe? How
long does it have to be? My pipes don't
really get an distance between them until
they split apart at the rear end.

I have a 4.6l also and I went with a true dual setup with 31" (36"OA) glasspacks and I can tell you this. The sound, excellent! There will be a loss of low-end power however. I actually thought the truck had more power stock and could feel the difference. It is not real bad but it is there. I am currently looking for a new exhaust setup. I have read that if I add an H-pipe that it should help correct the problem but I am not sure.

I have true duals on my 4.6. I have 2-chamber flowmasters, 3" pipes all the way through, the come out the back with 4" chrome tips. They have a great sound, and they added a lot of hp. They have a really deep tone, one that is not obnoxious.

I "Y" piped mine off behind the cats into 2 pipes (2 1/4" so as to keep backpressure and low end). Then I ran them straight out the back with 3.5" stainless stell tips. I have had lots of compliments on the sound of this, and I really like the sound. I pulled a 1,000 gallon water wagon with it 2 days ago (full) and I noticed no loss in power. Actually think I have more power in the mid-to-upper range.

I have a SpinTech system on my F-150 and recommend it for performance (no torque loss, increase hp), and GREAT sound quality. Not too loud, not to quite.
I have a Gibson SS on my Suburban and recommend it if you want a good performing (no torque loss, increase hp), quite system.
I have FlowMasters on my Mustang and do not recommend them due to the drone and the "ting, ting" sound they produce . It may just be the muffler model that I have that causes the drone but I don't like the sound either. I will be replacing them with a SpinTech setup. Much better sound IMO.

I just had the Dynomax Ultraflow installed. SI/SO. 2.5" from cat to 3". Exits out factory side before tire. Sounds great! Hardly any cab noise on highway. Nice idle. Very nice off the line. Didn't notice any torque loss. The truck pulls really smooth. Did notice slight power gain. For the price...$200 installed. it can't be beat!

Trapper,
From all the data I've seen, the length of the crossover tube really isn't an issue. It also seems that the "X" type setup holds the advantage over the "H" setup. Check out some of the car ads and you will se what I mean.
I think that many people just use the "H" setup on older cars, and vehicles with pipes that have more seperation when on the vehicle. Many of the new vehicles route both tubes down one side, similar to the Lightnings.
