Talking Just ordered spintech XL muffler 304SS

I just ordered a Spintech stainless steel muffler and intermediate pipe for the truck.I'll post impressions when its installed next week. Check out their website at www.spintechmufflers.com I suggest calling the toll free number and speaking to someone,as I was surprised to find that their larger muffler is actually louder, because of the way it is constructed. with the baffling elements in a row as opposed to side by side. This is the difference between a 16" and a 20 to 22" unit.

jstang,
Are you sure the larger mufflers are supposed to be louder? The guys that installed mine said different. What's the toll free number? I'd like to talk to someone from spintech to find out for sure. If what you said is right then I'm going to take my truck back and get the louder one installed.

Thumbs up

I like it. It has a deep rumble, not at all loud, at idle. You can tell it's not stock. When you get on it, it is aggressive with out being loud, like you would expect a factory performance system to sound like.It does produce a mild drone @1700 rpms(highway in OD), however I don't think it will be annoying on long trips( I will post when I have more highway time), with my 3:08's its around 70mph,and it only occurs within a very narrow rpm range, 1700 rpm thats it!! I haven't detected any loss of low end torque, nor have I had it wide open yet. This review is only after 18 miles.I choose the spintech because I wanted stainless steel, and they offer an assortment of mufflers depending on your application, unlike , say Edelbrock, gibson, etc. When I called Spintech, I explained my first concern was no loss of torque. and I wanted something with better sound.Ron explained that the size of the case effects velocity, and how much restriction they can build into the muffler.I had it installed at a custom auto shop, the owner said he would install the 16" muffler first and then put the stainless pipe in after the muffler, this would make for a deeper tone, as opposed to having the extra pipe leading into the muffler. I wanted to be conservitive on the truck, and I would recommend this to anyone who wants a little more and aggressive sound, but doesn't want to give up anything else, or isn't looking for loud, or huge gains. Its hard to make desicions based on other peoples opinions of exhaust systems. My advice is to call them explain what you are after, and have them explain the differences to you.I will update this soon.

I just went for a moderate highway trip, the drone only occurs when appling the throttle, not while crusing, at the 1700 rpm mark, which is for me about 70 mph. It was not at all annoying, like I said, it is only a slight noise, and driving around town, it still only seems to occur when appling the throttle at the 1700 mark. when the cruise control is on its queit, if you come to a hill and it opens up a bit you can hear it. if it were constant I may have been concerned. We'll see how the mileage is.

Just figured that I'd add that the smaller the muffler the louder...Now I'm not exactly sure what series number my spintech muffler is...But I do know that it is the smallest and the loudest spintech offers...Cause well see I only have a 4.2 so I need all I can get

well, not exactly, the sportsman XL, the Truck/rv and the SUV mufflers are 16', 20" and 22", the arrangment of the baffling determines how quiet the muffler is, the 20' has 5 baffles in a row on an angle the lenght of the case, the 16" has 6 baffles side by side, and all of the flow must pass the 6 baffles, where on the 20' it only has to pass from one side to the other. They do offer other mufflers, in all different sizes, however after talking to Ron, its more a case of how it is constructed than how big the unit is, they also have very loud 16" units, with less baffling.

I think it was a 3333 xl, 2.5 in 2.5 out offset 16"X9.5"X4.5", If I remember correctly. I really like it, not at all loud, just different. A mild throaty sound. just slighty more pronounched when your on it.
