Looking for a little more rumble
I have had my SS Gibson split rear on for about a year now. I have to say when I first had it installed I was a little dissapointed. Not much louder than stock. I was able to get over that simply from the performance gains.
Now that summer is here in upstate NY, everyone has there summer vehicles on the road and man do some of them sound bad(in a good way). I am now craving the loud rumble again.
The question I pose to my F150 family is, Is there anything I can do to give me a little more noise. I hate to think I would have to scrap a $500 cat back, or even put an aluminum muffler in the middle of my stainless pipes. If it was possible to eliminate our cats I would. Thanks in advance

I purchased a 2001 Supercrew with the 5.4 a few months ago and I was also wanting to get rid of that large restrictive muffler. Ended up just chopping the muffler off and running dual exhaust from the converters to the back.
The converter provides enough dampening and has a nice rumble while still being legal. A few other guys here in town did the same thing.

I just met a guy locally here in Detroit who has the deepest sounding exhaust I ever heard. I asked him what muffler he was using, and he said "a prochamber" He said it was division of Dynomax, but he didn't sound to sure of it.
He had two large tips(slash cut) coming out at the front of the rear wheels. It rumbled enough to make me crawl out from under the dash of my truck as he went by. Nice sound, but no high pitch to it at all,,,,,98
Oh,forgot to mention it was a late model F-150

The Dynomax Ultra-flow is stainless steel and has a straight-through design. It has alot of sound considering the multi-cat setup.

Get an Xcelerator Muffler put on. No offense, but if you want sound don't use Gibson
.
It sould only cost about $80 for a new muffler.

I just put on a Gibson Super Truck Exhaust. It's a dual tip out in front of the passenger rear tire. It looks sick, and it sounds sicker. It's Gibson's loudest exhaust and it just has a great sound to it. I would be hesitant about running just straight pipes with no mufflers because sometimes that can sound pretty sh#tty.

This is only speculation because I only read a post on it someplace, but I "heard" that you could install the Gibson muffler "backwards" and get a bit more sound out of it. They way you know it's backward (or forward) is that one end is shorter and has louvers in the muffler pipe that is intended as the inlet. The other end is longer and just has dimples in the pipe. My guess is that by reversing it, none of the exhaust will be channeled into the louvers and thus not "mufffle" as much of the sound.
Again, not sure if it's true, but makes some sense. I decided to go the "louvers in" route just because I didn't want it "too" loud. Was very tempted to install "louvers out". Still may do it.... someday?

Duhhhh!!! I just reread your question and you say you have the split rear. I just saw the "SS Gibson" part of your message and thought it was the Swept Side. So reversing will not do too much in your case, since you won't be able to. Sorry about that. Got me to think about doing it to mine again!!

By far one of the sweetest sound I have heard on a 5.4 is the single chamber flowmaster. The FM is like $60 bucks threw summit. I had to catch up to the fella drivin it because I wanted to find out what I was hearing. All opinions though. Hope this helps.
