These trucks all run rich to be on the safe side. I used to work at a place with 5 late model f-150's and they all had the black tailpipe. I think it is actually worse now with the chip and catback, but nothing to be alarmed about.

According to the Haynes manual I got it says black soot in the tail pipe is a indication that the truck may need a tune-up. IMO I think a little soot in the tailpipe of any truck is pretty normal and nothing to worry about. I have seen pratically brand new truck's with soooty tailpipe's.

Post Tailpipe stained black

I noticed my tailpipe is stained black around the tip of the tailpipe. At first I thought it was because my engine running too lean due to my having a superchip and Granatelli MAF. I removed the MAF and replaced it with stock but then noticed my neighbor's Supercrew had the same charcoal residue. Is this normal for 5.4L engine or is it an indication of a problem?

Thumbs up

Thanks everyone! I feel much better. I am hoping to do either the Corsa, Ravin or Gibson exhaust this week. After I run it for a while I'll reinstall the Granatelli MAF and see what happens.
Howies_effie - Where did you get your WMS Velocity Tube? I've searched the web but can't find any info.
Max Mitchell - What is the Outwears prefilter?

Supercrewzer - the WMS Velocity Tube was my first mod. Put it on at 5000 miles - it is an economical choice compared to the K&N or AirRaid but it was a less-than-flawless install - the lines entering the tube near the throttle body didn't quite line up and required a small amount of 'adjustment.' It is a good product for a good price, all things considered. You might consider making your own from a piece of 3" steel tube (like Neal 'the HP freak' has done). Good luck!
