Question Using orignal piping and new muffler?

What would this do or sound if I just got a flowmaster 40 series si/so using same pipe came with truck? Sound? What about bac presure or low end torque? I really want to keep exhaust in same location but still would like a deeper , throaty growl to her, without drone in cab? Is this possible? >>>-ONE->

I just put on a FM 50 Delta series using the existing pipe. Works great. Not overly loud, but you can tell it isn't stock. Sounds real good when you get on it. I wouldn't bother with 3" unless you're going to go all the way back to the cats and make a new Y pipe. Otherwise, you're wasting your time.

Bryan,
I can't speak for a FM40, but I did put in a FM 50 SUV keeping the stock tail pipe. You will need to put in an 8"+/- extension on the motor side because the FM is shorter than stock muffler. This also keeps in under bed (ext. cab). I have no interior drone and can barely hear the exhaust with windows up. It is deeper than stock and you can tell a difference in the sound from stock at start up and under heavy excelleration. If I remember correctly the SI/So was 3" and we flared one end of ext. and the tailpipe. No loss in power-or gain?
Sounds better than stock, especially when I am sleeping and the wife tries to sneak out in my truck because she has no gas!

I've got the 5.4L motor with the 40 Series Flowmaster. Just like you explained. All I did was remove the stock muffler, and replace it with the 40 and a section of pipe to complete the new gap. At first, I had it with just the new muffler and stock exhaust pipe. You could hear it when you turn the motor over, and a little when you get on it. But I'm a redneck. I love it loud (I may just bypass the muffler all together in the future). So I added a 4" x 24" chrome echo tip. Loud enough for me, for now.
