Question What causes factory exhaust to "tick"?

I've always wondered about this! Back in high school I borrowed my dad's 89 Cadillac, and I came back with the exhaust ticking. He got mad and said I must have been "getting on it" because it never does that when he drove it. He was right, I did do some aggressive driving LOL The F150 does this every time I drive it long enough to get the temp up to normal! I just wondered, my last car didn't do that (98 Mustang) or if it did, it was low enough to the ground that I didn't hear it so much LOL Anyone know what causes this? If I had to guess I'd say the metal was cooling and "expansion and contraction" was going on there. Just wondering if anyone knew! Thanks

Cool

I had an interesting experience with a lowered Civic! He was revving up the "butt funnel" exhaust, so I just dropped the hammer, I didn't pre load (power brake), and I got white smoke! It didn't get squirely like the Mustang, it stayed straight and smoked the rears for about 100 ft! This was new road, that may be a factor, and it's been in the 90's here. It suprised me because up until this incident I thought the truck was a bit sluggish. I guess it goes when it wants to! I'm going to have to go out and try to duplicate the situation!
