Ravin' on order -- thanks to all for your help!
After spending the last week going through just about every exhaust thread I could find, calling the manufacturers and speaking to about 10 difference performance and muffler shops, I have decided to go with the Ravin' Z-55.
My local Midas shop will install the muffler (keeping the stock pipes) for $165.
It was an extremely tough choice between the Gibson SS and the Ravin', however, I liked the sound of the Ravin better (not to soft/not too loud). From what I could find out, there is minimal difference in performance between the two systems (although I could not get any hard specs on the Ravin). Since performance was important to me, I heavily relied on the numerous postings here to help me out.
Thanks to all for your helpful and in-depth posts on both systems.
I am having it installed on 3/5 -- will let you know the results.

cyclone,
you know i'm watching and am interested in your feedback. specifically....how loud over stock while idling and at highway speeds.
i committed to the shop in my other tread for 15 mar. although i'm going with the exlerator for now, i can substitute the raven if i choose. keep us advised.
i assume from your post you aren't getting a dual cat back.

Kenny,
I was due to have my exhaust installed today but we ended up with a winter storm instead (damn!). It has been rescheduled for Wednesday -- I will certainly let you know how it goes.
You are right, I am not getting the duals just yet (too focused on not losing low end torque) -- maybe once I add more mods, I'll have duals installed. For now, I was looking for better sound and performance. I am using the stock pipes and just replacing the muffler (so I will have a SI/SO).
Take care...

Well, I had the Ravin' installed yesterday and I have to agree with the majority of respondants on this subject -- it is a great muffler!
I got the Z-55 installed because I wanted a good mix between sound and performance. That is exactly what this system delivers.
At idle it is certainly louder than stock but not too much (I would assume it is similar to the Gibson Dual Sport and Flowmaster 50). On the highway, you can certainly hear it but it is a nice mellow drone -- it is most noticable between 1500 and 2000 rpm). When you open it up, it sounds great! Throughout the entire range, the sound is a deep, smooth rumble that build to a growl at WOT.
For those of you who like a "very" noticible sound at idle -- this is probably not the muffler for you. However, if you want a system that sounds great, is louder than stock and gives you the added benefit of more HP and Torque (especially in the mid range) this is certainly a system worth looking at!!!
Regards

I wouldn't mind having the chip instead, but it is totally uneconomical for me to have the chip. As I understand, you have to run premium gas, and the mileage increase is really not very noticeable. I drive way to many miles for business and the price difference for the premium would kill me. At least with the programmer, you don't have to change the gas, and you can alter the running methods of the truck. Somedays I have an 8000lb boat to pull, somedays I do nothing but highway driving. I'm afraid with the chip, that I'll have to sacrifice one for the other. I'm not quite ready to do anything, I have a lot of research to do before I do anything.
