Question Exhaust questions (Gibson)

I'm very interested in getting (finally) a upgraded exhaust for my X. I have pretty much made up my mind on the Gibson system. The 'dual sport' in particular.

Ok, now for the questions. I have read several posts about people having problems w/ the baffles on the Gibson muffler. I'm not sure if maybe their exhaust has been exposed to stressful conditions (off-roading), but my truck never sees any more than some dirt in the road. Actually, i generally avoid dirt roads and rough roads at all costs. The baffle problem (which i'm not sure it's all that much of a 'common' problem) has lead me to consider the MagnaFlow system. What are your opinions on this? Did you bolt your system up yourself? If so, would you recommend doing it myself or paying an exhaust shop the little bit they charge for labor to bolt it up? Have you had any problems with it since installation? Has it been maintaince free? Finally, if you dont mind me asking, what did you pay for your system? Thanks in advance to anyone and everyone for any suggestions/advice/opinions. One more thing, I'm posting this in the Expedition forum also, if you have read this once already thanks for understanding.

AlanM,
I have several of the same questions and will have answers soon as I have ordered a Gibson Swept Side system for my SCrew. I plan on trying to do the install myself and hope it is not too difficult. My system cost about $270 and is the aluminized version with a SS tip. I am looking for a little kick in the pants and a little more rumble and hope I get both. I'll post what the results are. It should be here early next week.

Thank you very much for your reply. I'll be looking forward to hearing what you think of your new system.

I installed my Gibson Swept Side about 4.5 yrs ago and about 46,000 miles ago. I have not had any quality issues at all. It was fairly simple to install and I did it in my garage in about 3 hrs.

I have not had any problems with baffles or any problem with rust. I drive about 17 miles one way to work and I think that would help any exhaust... it gives it a chance to get hot and dry up any moisture in the system.

I bought the system from www.truckperformance.com and paid about $275 shipped.

Good luck with your exhaust

No rattles on mine since I put it on a couple years back. I paid just short of $400 including shipping for a stainless system for my '95. I have the single exit side swept.

I think any of the problems get blown out of proportion at times on the 'net. For every 100 people saying the problem exists you can find maybe 1 or 2 that have actually had it.

Same goes for performance gains, etc. A few people say one has WAY more power, and in time everyone thinks it's true. Some seaching the old treads on this site will open some eyes to that wave effect. Systems that were once claimed to maintain low end torque are now stated to cause "significant losses" by some of the same people.

Show me the dyno's I say. After hearing all the hype about the Magna systems I finally found one dyno..... all of a couple lb ft over a Flowmaster system, and at about twice the price.

Installed Gibson Super Truck for the 4.6L Screw. Installed the thing in like 2 hours using simple tools, Dremel, sawzall, and no jack (just crawled under there). I spent 280 for the cat-back.

The SOTP dyno showed significant loss in the low-end. I don't really care too much about dyno test results . However, I believe most people can appreciate what "we can feel" more than just numbers. The torque we feel on our very backs is what gets us excited, don't you agree?

I've had my Gibson sweptside for about 6 months, and have had no problems or regrets whatsoever. I had mine installed at four wheel parts for a litte above $400. I definitely recommend the Gibson.

Wink

I'm one of the unlucky ones to get the dreaded baffle rattle from my Gibson SS. I've never had any luck with aftermarket baffled mufflers anyway, so I guess I'm just not meant to have them....

I will say that I was impressed by the Gibson over the stock unit. Both in sound and performance.

I replaced the Gibson with a straight through design Flo-Pro. It's louder, but no drone and I do tow a #4500 travel trailer, so low end is a must!!

I can only report on the SOTP 'dyno' and after towing with the Gibson and the Flo-Pro, the Flo-Pro wins hands down.

On the same hills that would cause a downshift to maintain speed with the Gibson, I can now hold speed in third gear and even pick up some speed!

I did keep the Gibson 3" tail pipe, so that probably helps too.

I'd still have the Gibson if it didn't rattle, so it's still better then stock, but I'm actually kinda glad it 'broke'.........

Where are the two dyno results of back to back Flowmaster vs. Magnaflow?

Thumbs up

Well I finally got my Swept Side system put on last weekend. It seems to be just what I wanted. This is not a loud system at all, but when you start the truck it rumbles and has a nice deep tone at speed, but not at all annoying in the cab. I can't say that a I notice a great increase in power, but probably a little pick up. It sems to cruise easier at highway speeds without all the backpressure when you let off. I have to say I am very pleased so far.

Looks great. Did you go with the stainless? I just installed the supertruck last month and love the sound. I wish they had it in stainless though.
