Question high flow muffler vs. glasspacks

What's the difference between a long glasspack and a high flow muffler? Shouldn't it be just as quiet with a long glasspack? Or do mufflers last longer? Why would anyone pay 80-100$ for a muffler, when you can get a glasspack with high flow and low noise for under 40$? Or is it impossible to get a glasspack as quiet as a muffler?
I'm considering a new exhaust system for my 88 F150 5.0L EFI. I want high flow but low noise. The Flowmaster 70 series seems the way to go, but they're too expensive (true duals). Can't I get the same effect with two long glasspacks?

Cool

Yes, longer glasspacks are quieter and their straight thru design can be free flowing. There are mufflers like the FM70s that are quieter. Glasspacks have fiberglass packing that blows out over time. Some HP mufflers use ceramic and stainless packing that holds up better. Some also use designs that create a scavenging effect as well. There are many cheaper mufflers than the FMs. Also, some people prefer stainless steel mufflers for durability over a steel shelled glasspack.
