Comprehensive Ravin Review
Hey all,
I just got my Ravin Z33 quad-exit system installed (SI/DO, 3" pipes all around, stainless steel 3.5" tips).
It took Midas 5 hours from start to finish (its too bad labour is in abundance!), but it was worth the wait.
It has a nice deep idle, which is suprisingly subtle.
BUT....
When you mash the throttle, the sound produced is unique, and fitting from what I expected from Ravin.
From 1000-3000 RPM, its a deep V-8 rumble, which can be described as typical of all big blocks. But the way this muffler is engineered creates a mid-pitched aggressive wail from 3000-5000 rpm, comparable that of a Nascar (maybe im not as fast, but I sound just as good as them!).
Although I lost a fractional amount of torque from the opening up of the system, I gained some upper-range pull.
What I like most is the ability to rev it and turn heads, and to see the look on people faces when they see a truck making that sound instead of some hot-rod Camaro or 'Stang!!!!!
On the highway, in fourth gear, at about 120 km/h (sorry all you non-metric guys), the sound is unbearable. There is alot of drone.
Every exhaust system has a certain "sweetspot" (mine is @ 2500 rpm in 4th) where its abnormally loud. So, at 100 km/h is fairly quiet, but once the tach sweeps upward, its like a full-fledged low-frequency rumble, which I cant hear a normal conversation over.
However, I spend most of my time in the city, where the sound only comes to life when you open up the throttle.
I've heard a Borla on a 4.6, and although it sounds quality, its too mellow.
I've heard a Flowmaster 40 on a 4.6 and that sounds somewhat close to a Ravin, but the sound is very tin-like, or metallic.
The Ravin also has the gurgle when you let off the throttle. I love it personally, because it gives a racey sound, but some guys out there dont like it.
I cant wait to see a Honda at a light!!! (I know I'm a bully, but hey, someone's gotta teach them a lesson with their 20 kilos of stickers on their cars)
Ricers beware............

Modestroman,
Heh heh thanks for the info. I'm lookin to put a Ravin system on my 2001 SC. I'll probably go with the Z55 and some larger tips (3in. diameter, 18in long Im thinkin) Being one of those 'non-metric' folk, Im not sure what speed you were movin at. But because of travel concerns I don't want so much drone, and will opt for the Z55.
I 2nd ya on the downing of the ricers!! I previously had a 98 Ext Cab, 4.6 with a cat back setup on it. Was stopped at a light in Houston (lived in Dallas at the time) and some punk and his gf were beside me. He had a little ricer and was revvin the engine...what a god awful sound. So I put my foot on the brake and revved mine up and endded up braking the tires loose! it was funny as hell, he looked all pissed off, and his gf was smiling my way, HA HA :P
When the light turned green he tried to pop the clutch and turn the tires, but his little car couldn't handle it...
