K&N FIPK - excessive noise, or just me?
Yo Slick, You can hear this noise over your killer exhaust system?
Does it happen at all RPM's? OR just one specific area?

It's normal. It should sound like a snake hissing and the suction is normal also.
I wondered the same thing when I installed mine. You get used to it.

Has anyone noticed how loud the K&N FIPK is on a 5.4? It sounds like a swarm of Locus when driving under normal throttle. I've checked (and re-checked) all vacuum hoses and all are tight. Put my ear to the filter, and it appears all the noise is coming from the tube via the filter. Was wondering if others noticed this or if I've done someting wrong on the install. Oh yea, when I turn the ignition off, I hear a suction noise lasting about 2-3 seconds after the engine has stopped?
Thanks,
SlickWilly2

dont worry bout the noise thats suppose to happen. the reason your hearin that is because a K&N FIPK was designed to give u more air to the engine right? well that sound your hearin is just how hard the air is bein sucked in. thats a good thing. the reason u didnt hear it with the old intake was because u had that condom over the air filter and it restricted it soo much it wasnt funny. the noise is a small price to pay for the gains u recieved im sure! all that means is u need a louder exhaust so u can hear the pipes rumblin and it will take your mind off the intake. ford15098
Then, a loud music system to keep your senses out of the exhaust.
I had the same experience with my K&N, sounds like a snake sometimes at idle and the suction noise when turning the ignition off is there. But man,... it growls under acceleration and you know that.

Thanks everyone - The snake-like noise is a small price to pay for the increased performance, and it does sound good under FOT (like when we used to flip the top of the carb housing on the old 4-barrel). The Flowmaster Force II exhaust could probably be a little more aggressive, but it does drown out the snake sound under throttle.
LaserNav - JBA headers go in this week, arrived at the door on Friday. Ordered SuperChip to go in a week or two later. How's the SuperChip working with your mods?

SlickWilly2,
"like when we used to flip the top of the carb housing on the old 4-barrel"
I'm glad to know I am not the only one here old enough to have done that.
When my Dad rode in my 73 Challenger the first time he asked me what that sucking sound was. I remember telling him "that those Holleys carbs needs to breathe" He never understood why that was music to my ears.

I agree "mellower"; I installed the K&N FIPK recently, it is nice, and louder, but nothing like a "flipped lid" on a large cube Quadrajet. The performance increase was very noticeable and the combined sound of intake and exhaust is very sweet and menacing.

I know this is an old subject but I just installed an Airaid FIPK on my stock 2000 Expedition. I still sounds stock at idle and normal driving but when I romp on it it sounds a little mellower than what was described as "back when we flipped the top".
I understand the K&N has a plastic tube. The Airaid is a very nice solid installing kit with an aluminum tube. That could be part of the difference in external sound.
I'm doing a mellow sounding cat back next. They should complement each other nicely, especaily when I feel like getting into the chip....
