Correlation of Muffler Tips Design and Sound

What role does the size of the muffler tips do to the sound of the system?

1. Diameter?
2. Length?

Let's say, for example, I have a system with a 2.5" diameter tail pipe. If i attach a 4" diameter of 8" length tip, will the sound be different compared to the same system, but with a tip that is 3" in diameter?

Also, how does the shape of the muffler tips affect the sound of the system?

1. Oval?
2. Round?
3. Square?
4. Turn down?
5. funnel?
6. no tips installed?
7. rolled?
8. straight

For example, how will a system with square tips sound different from the same system, but with a round/rolled tip?

I would appreciate anyones input. Thanks.

Kali,

I dont have an answer to your question, but when I was calling around to shops for prices and suggestions for my SI/DO set up I spoke to a clown at the local Midas shop who said he was the Manager, and he said (I swear I am not making this up) "It doesent matter what muffler you get, glass pack straight thru or Magnaflow or Flowmaster, they all sound the same, it is the tips that make the difference".

Needless to say I did not get my system put on at Midas.

The tips do give it different sounds, but the muffler plays a large part of the sound, the tips in my opinion magnify the sound.
