Magnaflow muffler size
I have a 2000 5.4L 4x4 regular cab. I want to put a 3" magnaflow set-up on. What type of muffler do I get? I think I need an oval type center in/out, however which size...4x9? 5x8? or 5x11"...what's the difference?
Hope this helps
I went to this web site and did a search for my 1998 F150 4X4 5.4L and received the 12368 part number for the magnaflo and pipes.

That's what I thought. Then I get the following email from Magnaflow technical services:
bigger the muffler the louder. 22" length is fine. I'd go with a 5x11"
muffler. Thanks

What's up with that??

Wow, I am surprised! Larger = more insulation = quieter was what I have been told. You know all the import cars with the small 6" canister mufflers are loud, yet a V8 with large straight through Magnaflow are tame. Maybe others can chime in I guess.
When in doubt, pick the middle of the road.

Wierd... maybe that guy is a newbie and got confused. Smaller cased mufflers of the same model/type are always louder than ones with larger cases. Just like glasspacks... shorter they are the louder, longer ones are deeper and more mellow.
APT,
You are correct bigger is quiter. I'm a Magnaflow Distributor and it goes by size.
shoboat90:
How load do you want it?
If you want it super load then run the 5x8x14 part# 12219
If you want it just load then run the 5x8x18 part# 12249
If you want it quite then run the 5x11x22 part# 12579
All these are 3" single in/out mufflers
I do have a sound file of the 5x8x18 if you want to hear what it sounds like in the cab of the truck under hard acceleration.

Joe

shoboat90,
While they are not the Maganflows, the Bassani has some pretty large mufflers on it, and it is loud under WOT, but under less then 50% TPS, the sound is quite.
I don't know if the sound level and note are loud by the size of the muffler, or from the tips on the system.
It is a louder system then the Gibson ST under WOT, but with a better sounding note.
Kind of crappy pics, I need to get better ones, but you can get an idea of how much length there is on a SCrew body layout.

The sound could be amplified by the type of tips used on the system:

Guess a more detailed answer would be when do you want it louder, during TPS > 80%, or all the time so it has that 60s era lopping cam sound at idle. ???
Got me, thought I might pass on something that I foudn out after the switch.....maybe it is not the same as Magnaflow's design ???

Juiced,
I posted this question under 'Drivetrain\Exhaust' earlier today and just seen\read your reply below that you are a Magnaflow Distributor.
Perhaps you might know the answer to my question?
What muffler does MagnaFlow include in their #15609 kits (I need p/n’s).
Thanks,

It's most likely going to be the #12579 as they recomend that for all big engine setups. But I would need to double check tommorow once I get back to the shop.
