What's that little black canister?
On my 2001 SCrew there is a small (about 6" long) canister clamped to the exhaust pipe on a pod about halfway between the muffler and where the two pipes join up. Any body know what that is/what it's for?
(I saw it when trying to find a vibration noise coming from under the truck when AC is on and the truck is stopped with the footbrake. BTW, anyone else have this problem?)

Inavarro,
It's a counter weight Ford installed to help eliminate a resonance at certain rpms. I guess the R&D guys at Ford decided that this was a better fix than designing a less restrictive, free flowing exaust! Welcome to the party!

Thanks onemilmhz.
Can I assume it's OK to remove that puppy to see if my vibration noise goes away?

Hey guys...I have a 2001 4.6L with a FM 40 installed. I WANT more resonance!!!
(Know what I mean?) What do these counter balances do, and how do they work? How can they be removed? I also noticed that near the bend in the pipe, where it crosses the axle, their is another piece of metal welded to the top side of it. What the heck is that for? TIA!!!
