Hey go with the flowmaster 40 series. you can keep the stock tip in the stock position.
Just get a flowmaster single in single out. you will love the sound. and it sounds better than a glasspack. which is also a type of muffler. " i dont mean any direspect to anyone who has glasspacks"

glasspack is a type of muffler. it looks like a long slender cylinder. there is fiberglass inside. it's very loud. idle and low cruising rpms sound cool. there is alot of interior cabin noise. at higher rpms it gets a little high pitched and is affectionately referred to as a mad hornet.
it may sound better on a v8 than a v6.
i took the glasspack off of my v6 and replaced it with a superturbo - alot quieter and no more drone. some like it, some don't. there really isn't any perfomance benefits or downfalls, it is a straight flow muffler w/ perforated fiberglass as an obstacle (were the louder sound comes from). no muffler has a seat of the pants increase in performance feel - even though they all claim to have the greatest horsepower increase. even if there is a benefit it is small.
it really comes down to on what you like to hear coming from your truck.
many claim flowmaster gives their truck an almost v8 sound - low, deep rumble. the dynomax superturbo made my truck sound like a stock mustang gt. and the glasspack is loud and rumbly, but can be a tad bit high pitched. i have almost no interior noise f/ the dynomax and there is little interior noise w/ flowmaster (but louder on the exterior) and there is interior drone f/ a glasspack.
if i still had my glasspack i would let you have it to test drive but i forgot to ask for it during the muffler swap.

sorry for the long answer.

Question "Glasspack?"

Say Pals,

What is a "glasspack"?
What does it look like?
Any significant value added to performance?
Is this a bolt on for a "at home wrench"?
Where does one purchase one?
Is there one made for a 4.2l?

Sorry for all the questions. Hope some of you can answer.
Trying to keep the stock look. So little to no vesible mods is what I'm after.

Glasspacks are the worst thing you can do to your truck.

Don't go with a glasspack, Their just not worth the money. I had a single in dual out on my truck when I had the exhaust first done and when I reved up it was soo high pitched I could barely stand it. I went with magnaflows when I had my exhaust redone, it sounds so much better. Unless you want the "bumble bee" glasspacks would not be the best choice.

Pony had it and knows best how it works and sounds with the 4.2L engine. But be careful when shopping.

A glasspack is really two "tubes". The inner tube is perforated (actually louvered) then wrapped with fiberglass and stuffed into the outer tube or casing. This outer casing isn't always a tube, but 99% are. The ends of the outer shell are then "crimped" and mating pipes are welded on. Glasspacks flow almost as much as a straight pipe and are quite loud. And, as the fiberglass burns out, they get louder.

Contrary to indications here, glasspacks are usually quite cheap. About $20 at most shops. If you like the sound, they are very economical. Just do it right. The most common mistake is that people go in and ask for 3" pipe and 12" long glasspacks. This is a very bad setup. What you want is a small pipe (2-2.25") and a very long 32"+ 'pack. The small pipes keep you from "losing" low-end power and the long 'pack gives a deeper, more mellow sound.

You have received good advice here. Now my .o2 worth. If your engine has a long stroke you want a longer glasspack. Now if it has a short stroke you want a short glasspack so it snap crackles and pops more <if that is what you like>

I have a longer one on my 302 and I shoulda gotten a shorter one so it snaps more when I let off. If you would like to hear mine just email me and I can send the wav file to you.

Nomo,
I went and listened to your Expedition and it sounded darn nice. Did you do that yourself ? Do you have any cats on it?

Thanks.
The exhaust is cat-back. The shop just cut the OEM Y-pipe and welded the 2.25" ones onto them. It has "true" duals and is 100% emissions legal (in OK).

hey freak,
true, some states have tighter inspections than Tennessee, but, i don't believe Texas is one of them...some of my best friends live in Austin, and run straight pipes..most states gripe if you remove the converters, not the muffler(s)...anyway, good luck, Rich

I just had a split rear exh sys installed, has a reversed glass pack on it and sounds great. The shop said they would install a flowmaster 40 if I wanted it, but he said these have a better sound and just the right amout of back pressure. I love it!! 260.00 with good crome tips

I hate to say it like this but I think I would know. about three months ago I quit a job where I had been a state inspector for 10 months. I failed many veichles for no muffler. The texas state law says that you must have a noise control devise on all 75 and newer veichles(next year it will be 76 years and newer) even if it is a flowmaster series 10 or a 12" glasspack.

Question

f150freak,

U mean to say you can't have straight pipes even if you have on cats? Not that it matters much in South Dakota where I live? Also I have never heard/seen an emmissions test before. I have 2 cats on my pickup can I take them off and put on 2 high flow cats an still be legal? Not that it matters much here but I don't want to get fined, cuz I want to put on true duals soon. Thanks
