Angry Heat Riser

Why would someone weld open the heat Riser? Bought used 86 f150 and trying to figure it out. Any help would be great!

Thanks

The sring probably broke and it was making a racket so they welded it open.

Well, since the heat riser is supposed to supply heat from the exhaust to the automatic choke during engine warm-up, it might affect your gas mileage if it was closed all the time. This would cause the choke to close down more creating a rich condition and poor mixture ratio at normal operating temps. If the heat riser won't open up on it's own, then I guess the best solution would be to fix it or wire / weld it open. This is just my guess...maybe someone else here can give some expert advice.
