Question about Flowmaster 40's
I got a question for y'all running Flowmater 40's. I'm going to put a set on my truck (see my signature)and was wondering about the set up. I want to run two pipes out the back (under the bumper). I'm going to keep the pipe diameter the same as stock with 3" tips. Those of you who have the same set up, did you use a single muffler with single inlet/dual outlet or did you use two single inlet/single outlet mufflers? I definately don't want to lose any low end torque (if I wanted a truck with no torque I would have bought a Chevy!) I mainly want the sound. Is there any advantage to having the two mufflers (is it louder?) as oposed to just the one?

Very good question Kentucky - I have been wondering the same thing - of course this is a "hot" opinionated topic (which exhaust, I mean). I know most sports cars use the 2 pipes, 2 mufflers (I guess true duals), so you might think that would be a good philosophy for our trucks too. I have seen the posts on true duals here and most that have them really like them, and then those that have the cat back systems really like them too. The only problem I could possibly see with the true duals is the "routing" of the left or drivers side pipe underneath the truck - Imean, since there isn't a pipe on the left side from the factory, how do you route that baby? There was a good sound clip someone posted here a while back of straight pipes with no mufflers, and man, did that sound good - I just don't know if I would be able to stay out of trouble with it!
Can anyone assist those of us "indecisives" on this one? I think I have narrowed it down to either: 2 true flowmaster 40's sing in/sing out (delta series), or similar Borla setup (big $$$), or if neither of those will work out Flow 40 delta series sing in/dual out...now, which tips....geese

steveo,
Where did you order your tips from? That's the size I would like to get. Yeah I'm definately going to get the delta's. By the way I like your truck it looks alot like mine.
Captain,
I was looking under the truck. I was thinking about putting both mufflers right next to each other and then running the pipe from the driver's side muffler back like you would if you just had a single in/dual out muffler. You're definately right, it would take some work. I'm going to talk to our exhaust shop this weekend to see what can be done.
Another crazy idea I've been toying with is one of those exhaust switches (I've seen them in the J.C. Whitney catalog). It alows you to switch between two different systems (after the cat). I was thinking about putting on one Flowmaster 40 and one glassback. Then I could switch between them. Just a thought, anyone done this?

I am planning on running true duals, but using supertrapp mufflers because they are tunable. I will probably use a crossover pipe as well. The supertrapps are straight thru mufflers that fit on the end of the exhaust where the tips would be. There are difuser disks that bolt onto the end of them that create the opening. You can add disks for more sound and more flow, or you can take out disks to increase the torque. This way you can experiment until you find the right tuning for you and you can also adjust anytime you make other mods that might need more or less exhaust flow.
They have been used for quite a while in the hotrod scene and they are also very popular with motorcycle performance enthusiasts.
You can find out more at www.supertrapp.com

Only about 1/2 of the realy pony cars and sports cars use true dual exhaust. You have like the mustang which is true dual, then the camaros use a Y pipe to single in muffler, dual out.
Really it depends on the vehicle. What can you route the exhaust around. That is why the corvettes have more power than the camaros with basically the same engine. Corvette has true duals while the F bodys dont.

Don't forget the gas tank. True duals also retain their torque using smaller pipe. Pipe size and flow needs are also different for different engines/HP/mods. Flow rates are also doubled using 2)pipes/mufflers. Also, consider that your most forward restriction limits all things thereafter ex. 4)pre & reg cats, & Y-Pipe (the biggest limit in the whole OEM system @ 1-2.5" exit). You are not fully utilizing a 3" muffler or rear pipe if you have a 2.5" pipe feeding it. If you put a large hose at the end of your garden hose it does not flow any more water than the initial pipe/valve/hose. If using 1)3" pipe I recommend replacing the Y-pipe with one that has a 3" exit. If you have lower HP/cubic inch w/ no mods, you are ok with a single 2.5" pipe.
