They told me the same thing when I was shopping for exhausts, but it is not true. You can put true duals on your F150. However, it could cause you to lose too much back pressure. That is why I opted for the cat-back.

Gibson 2.5" split-rear exit cat-back exhaust, K&N Air Filter

Many more modifications to come

Question Questions on True Duals

I have a '99 F150 5.4L and am wanting to put true dual exhaust on it. I live in Dallas and have been calling around for prices and they tell me that you cannot put true dual exhaust on the new F150. From all of the post here I thought you can.. Are they telling me the truth??

bburk,
No they're lying! Most muffler shops nowadays order bolt-on products that are prebent with hardware and everything just like we can order over mailorder, only they get it cheaper. Thus, they don't have to learn how to actually bend, measure, fab hangers etc. for a (true) custom dual exhaust system. I had the same trouble, but I work about 45 miles away from where I live and I found a muffler shop over there with a fella that knew his sh_t! He installed the true duals, I watched him measure, cut, bend and mount every piece on my truck. He was a butthole, but he did an awesome job on the exhaust. Don't give up, you'll find someone that still knows enough to be able to do it for you.

Cool

while it is true that you can install the dual exhaust system on a vehicle you might be in trouble for a couple of reasons. There will always be plenty of back pressure for the engine to run so for someone to say that you lose power but putting dual exhaust systems on a vehicle is just not true. What will cause you problems is when this time to smog test the vehicle. You see federal law prohibits removing a catalytic converter that is not damage and if the vehicle has less than 50,000 mi. on it or is not five years old it must be replaced by the factory. The second problem you may run into during the smog test is you must have the same number of catalytic converters installed in the approximate same location as the factory. Here in California they are very strict. A friend of mine didn't believe me and almost had his vehicle impounded because of that.

beechkid-
Check under your truck. There is no need to alter or remove any of the emissions components. I'm not sure they would be OK in CA, but in most states, there is no problem with "true" duals.

Also, you CAN lose some low-rpm power if your exhaust is too free-flowing. Myself and others can attest to that from personal experience.

If you run true duals, make sure you put in a balance pipenear the front. It will help with the back pressure issue.

In Texas you have to leave your cats alone or the dps will fine the crap out of you, give you 30 days to replace them and if they are replace they will impound the vehicle.

The O2 sensors... there are 4 of them... are not in the Y-pipe. The configuration they are describing was for pre '97 model F150s.

There is no reason to mess with the cats. The pipes don't "Y" until after them, so true duals are a cat-back mod.

The "H" pipe is an excellent recommendation too.

Nomo is right. And a balance tube is a good idea, especially when adding a supercharger.

What is described here is not a "bolt on". I am only aware of one bolt on true dual kit and it is made by Borla. I will need to verify that though.

bburk,

I live in Garland and I got a pretty decent rate on my Flowmaster at AAA Muffler in downtown Garland. You can put a dual system on the V8 but its not recomended on the V6. Stay away from places like Merlin Muffler and Pronto they overcharge. Call all of the AAA Muffler shops around Garland because they are independently owned. Keep calling and good luck.

Hey Nickster,
Which Flowmaster mufflers did you install? And, do you have an "H" pipe on it? What differences did you notice? And, did you feel a noticeable loss in torque? Thanks in advance.

beechkid,
Do you have a reference to the laws you cited? I didn't know any of those. All I know is that a muffler shop guy recommended duals and said they were legal. I was thinking about installing hi-flow cats, maybe Dynomax Super Converters, but if I'm going to get nailed, I'd leave the cats alone. Thanks.

Anyone put Magnaflows on their 5.4l? What is the opinion? It seems that most here like the Flowmasters. I don't like them and want something different, something deep sounding but little resonance in the cab. I have heard the Flowmaster 50s and they sound raspy/resonant.
