Question 1997 Exhaust placement (before rear wheel)

My 1997 F150 has the exhaust that exits out the side before the rear wheel, and i see that the newer ones exit behind the rear wheel. I would like to change mine so it exits out after the rear wheel.(Due to wheel discoloration) My question is, due to the EPA making ford change the placement of the tips to behind the rear wheel, is there any chance to have this changed under warranty? if not, has anyone made this change? how did the conversion go?
thanks
George

If your truck is still under warranty they will relocate at no cost to you. If your warranty has expired you will have to pay to have it done.

I had the same problem. The exhaust was cooking my rims. I just swapped it out for a Gibson. Perfect fit.

PS398 Did you have this done? did you or anyone else have this done under warranty? Did the dealer give anyone any trouble about having it changed? Thanks for the help

46K miles and four years with this original in front of the rear tire exhaust placement and no problems. The Gibson Super truck is also in this configuration as is the Lightning and the Roush exhausts.

I've also got a 97 with 54000 miles that has the exhaust exiting in front of the rear passenger tire and I've never seen any discoloration of the tire or rim.

I actually like the look of the exhaust exiting in front of the tire better than behind, so much so that when I replaced the stock exhaust with a new catback system, I made sure that they put it in front of the rear tire just like it is stock on the 97.

Was this exhaust thing a recall? I just got my truck a couple of weeks ago. It is sitting in driveway right now showing exactly 36,000 miles! Should I get the change? I did notice that the center hub cap on the right rear was pitted and the others are still shiny new-like.
Would appreciate a quick response.

I never got it done because my truck was out of warranty when I bought it. It still exits in front of rear wheel. Last winter it turned the center cap green. This winter I have cleaned all the center caps with Nevr Dull each time I have washed it and have not had any green show up. It's a personal preference thing and the fact that out of pocket expence to do this through the dealership was outrageous, they wanted about $200 to do it. I kind of like the front exit especially now that I have a Flowmaster muffler. There was no recall just a TSB.

My service writer at the Ford house said it would be handled per a TSB. He ordered the kit and it should be done next week (while I have my roof cracks repaired.) It is done while under the factory warranty. I called him the day I read about it on this board. It was sitting in my driveway with exactly 36,000 miles. Had an extra four miles when I got to the dealer but it was no problem. Do you think they would replace the green pitted hub cap on the right rear wheel?
I learn so much from this board!

Replacing the center wheel cap is part of the TSB. I tried to just get the center cap replaced but the dealer refused unless I also got the exhaust moved. I like the way the exhaust looks in front of the wheel, so I used some cleaner/wax by Mequiars on the caps and they look great now!
