Question Tail Pipe Tips

Anybody have any suggestions / ideas about exhaust tips ?
Do they make a difference with sound ? Are they just for decoration ? Are they worth the time and effort ?

I think a couple places design theirs to reduce sound but i'm not sure. They are mostly for looks.

I have echo tips on my truck, they are 3.5" at the end, it made the truck "echo" a bit louder after I had them installed.

Some of the best looking tips I've seen are also unfortunately some of the most expensive. Take a look here:

Bones: When I had dual exhaust installed on my F-150, I wanted to get some nice tips. The dealer who installed them called them "echo" tips. Basically they are the large 3.5" slant cut tips(chrome). I believe mine were priced at $35.00 a piece.

I think they add a 'touch-up' to your truck. Nice look though.

It seems that the bigger the tips (larger O.D. and longer the more throaty and deeper the sound is. Probably just slightly, but it does enhance the sound a little bit. I've got the big tips like pastmaster and mine are like 18" long.

If you get the chrome tips keep them waxed. There's nothing worse than rusted/dirty chrome tips.

Hooker makes a tip which is adjustable for either tone or volume, not sure which. Supertrapp tips have rings that let you adjust backpressure and volume.

When you install slant-cut tips, do the openings go up or down?
