Post Black on end of tail pipe

Quick question... Ever since I bought my truck there has been a black residue on the end of my tail pipe. Is this normal? Truck runs great and this was happening before my new muffler and Superchip was added.

Thanks for any input.

Is the "black" on the exterior or interior of the tail pipe?

If your truck is a V-6, it's normal. Don't worry about it.

99XLT,
No matter what engine (4.2, 4.6 or 5.4) it is completely normal! It is a by-product of combustion. Both my 98 and now 2000 F-150 had(have) black on the tail pipe..inside and out). In fact, this is NOT unique to F series trucks. I have used 87 octane, 89 octane, and 92/93 octane from every gas station and no matter what..I still had the black on the tail pipe.

Do not worry...you are just fine! You can try a cleaner/polisher called NEVR DULL (yes, N-E-V-R)..which will clean it off and actually polish your tail pipe...making it look like new.

Thanks Dustoff. The only thing that I hate is that the exhaust is leaving black on the truck..... I dont recall seeing this before my new muffler was put on or the superchip.

Cool

If you want to clean it off. I have heard that you can use coke classic to get it off. Some strange acids in that stuff.

Thumbs up

I too have black residue on my crome tip. I think it's melted tire. From lightin' those bad boys up!

I used a 000 steel wool to try to clean it and dulled the crome finish. Oh well.
