Flowmaster 40's or 50's
I just bought a 2000 F-150 S/C Flairside and wanted to put Flowmaster's on it. My question is how do the 2 chamber 40 series flowmaster sound on the highway? Are they too loud? I do alot of highway driving and want to be able to talk to the person next to me. Or should I go with the 50 series 3 chamber muffler instead.
Are there any performance difference between the two?
Any help would be app.

I just put on a Flowmaster 40, dual out the rear and I love the sound. I have a 99 with the 5.4. Sounds and looks great, get a lot of compliments. The sound in the cab is minimal, all you hear is the low rumble but not bad at all for me. For a performance exhaust it is great. My opion is to go with the 40. Hope I helped.
I would agree with chevy sucks i have 40's on my 5.4 and they really get peoples attention, they sound great , but their not to loud in the cab.

HOW LOUD IS LOUD? Your question is hard to answer simply because we are all different. I have a three chamber flowmaster on my truck and I say the same things as the other guys. It sounds great! It has a mellow tone and its not too loud inside the cab.
The owner of the muffler shop I've used for many years suggusted that I NOT use a two chamber muffler. He had installed a number of them and many customers came back stating they were a little louder than they wanted. The day I was there, he only had a two chamber unit so he installed and told me that if I didn't like it, he would switch it the following week. The sound was nice until I reached freeway speed at about 65 MPH with engine revs at 1900-2200. At that point, things got too loud inside the cab for my taste. I went back the following week and got the 3 chamber. Much Better!
Since my experience with the 2 chamber, I've talked to at least two others who said they also found the muffler to be pretty loud beginning at about 2000 RPM. One of these guys drove a Mustang.
It still boils down to One's Opinion. Good luck with whatever choice you make.

Thanks to all for your replies, but after thinking about it I went ahead and installed the 50 series flowmaster with duals out the back. It sounds great when accelerating but when on the highway it is not disturbing. Also I noticed a big difference in throttle response.
Thanks again
Thanks again

veloci: I to have asked that same question. I don't remember getting any straight foreward answer. I did have my pipe routed in front of the rear tire. But the original pipe was there too. I do remember noticing when I first installed the flowmaster that the truck seemed to have more "pick-up". And another point to think about is that the Lightings all have their exhaust routed in front of the rear tire too. The only negative about this is the extra work you have to put into keeping the rear wheel clean. I've put extra effort into mine and it still looks great after 3 years.

If you go the flowmaster web site you can find all the details and specs on any muffler.

Veloci,
The guy at the muffler shop I went to installed a 3 inch pipe going in and 2 two and a half inch pipes going out with the 50 series muffler. I sounds great and I did not loose any low end torque at all. It actually feels like I gained some and the throttle responce is much much better.
Hope this helps you.

I had a 3" Gibson NASCAR-style exhaust on my '97 F-150 5.4L. I just a ton of low-end torque, the trans started shifting funny and the thing was WAY too loud at idle and cruise. I took it off after only a week and put my stock muffler back on! I have 3-chamber Flowmasters on my Mustang and I love them!!!
