SI/DO magnaflow muffler size
SI/DO magnaflow muffler size
Would there be a noticeable difference in either power or sound if I went with the 18 inch 4x9 or the 22 inch 5x11? im trying to make up my mind on which muffler to get. Thanks!
oh also, with the 5.4 v8 you would get 3 inch ID and dual 2.5 OD right?

For the same muffler design, the larger the muffler the quieter. Magnaflow isn't very loud compared to most aftermarket mufflers so keep that in mind. If you want it loud like a 40 series Flowmaster, no Magnaflow will get you there.
As for the size, I would go with what you listed, 3" in and dual 2.5" out. The stock piping is 2.5" so the shop will have to use an adapter to make it fit, but that is not a big deal.

Magnaflows are the mufflers I have on my truck. They are definately not as loud as Flowmasters. They are made by Walker for Magnaflow. If you want loud they are not your muffler, I would go with the Flowwmasters. I believe the stock exhaust is 2.5 inches into a 2.5 inch "y" pipe then into the muffler and out a 2.5 inch tip. Your "y" pipe and the stock muffler are going to be the restrictions. The Flowmaster will help to considerably relieve the exhaust restriction. If you are not going to remove the "y" then your inlet and outlet to the muffler will just be a matter of personal preference. You can purchase a better flowing"y" or just dual it out and get rid of the restriction all together. I believe the 5.4 can handle 2.5 inch duals but the 4.6 won't. I started with 2.5 and had to go back and get smaller I.D. pipe installed because it ran like crap. Going too large in the pipe diameter department kills the exhaust systems ability to scavenge exhaust gases from the cylinders, killing the engines ability to make power. Personally, for $50.00 to 100.00 more I would dual it out. Which ever one of the choices you are mulling over, you will gain a few horses and enjoy the sound. Good luck.

Here's my plan
Im in college so I dont have too much money to play with, other wise Id set it up with a true dual with magnaflow x-pipe and two SI/SO magnaflow mufflers.
But since I have limited resourcses, Im going to purchase the smaller magnaflow SI/DO muffler, and a magnaflow y-pipe. I can get both of those for 105 dollars before shipping from big exhaust. Then I plan on running dual 2.5 inch pipes from the muffler. Is 2.5 too big or should I go with 2.25? I have the a 99 5.4. I dont want it loud like a flowmaster, thats why I chose magnaflow. But 2.5 is good for what I want right?

Gsuquad,
Dual 2.5" is good for the 5.4L. I recommend ordering the Magnalfow pre-bent tail pipes for about $80 also from Big Exhaust. A shop can custom bend them, but the materials and labor for that work won't be close to what the prebent pipes cost, and you get mandrel bends that fit exactly right. What you need are here #15020/15021.
Another recomendation: skip the y-pipe and SIDO muffler. For about te same price you can have a DIDO muffler and cut still the factory y-pipe out. The Magnaflow DIDO mufflers have some kind of crossover in them, close to an H-pipe from what I hear. It may be enough and mayeb you won't have to replace anything later.

I read a thread that the superchips distributor guy said that the the crossover needs to come much further before the muffler if you plan on doing a dual exhaust. so basically if you are going to do a dual set up, you need to have the x pipe before the muffler and that the h-pipe built into the muffler was not as good. thats why i decided to go with what i posted earlier. Im still uncertain, but I think this is the route I will take.

A few people (like WLF most recently) have the pre-bent Magnaflow tail pipes and noted that the spare was kept with plenty of clearance.
I read that post by Mike T. about the crossover as well. For about the same money as you had in mind, you can have true dual setup. When you get some more money, you can just buy the external X-pipe and have it put into place. Seems cheaper overall than throwing away a SIDO muffler and buying two new mufflers and an x-pipe later. You may be satisfied without the external x-pipe, but my suggestion leaves you a cheaper upgrade path. Just trying to save you money was all.
I don't know as much as Mike about exhaust stuff, but I don't necessarily agree with everything he says. The placement of the X-pipe (if external to the muffler) cannot get much more upstream than the stock muffler position. A litte, but not much. Or, you can move the location of the DIDO muffler as far upstream as possible if you'd like.

Now I have a new question. Ive decided Ill have enough money to get somethign a little better. Here are my options:
A) Magnaflow y-pipe, magnaflow 3 inch SI/2.5 inch DO muffler, and the magnaflow mandrel bent tail pipes.
B) Magnaflow x-pipe, 2.5 DI 2.5 DO, and magnaflow mandrel bent tail pipes.
C)Magnaflow x-pipe, TWO 2.5 SI/SO mufflers, and the magnaflow tail pipes.
B will cost a little more than A, C will cost a lot more than B. On a stock motor, would option C produce much more horsepower/torque than B?
Pretty much Im leaning towards B, with the x-pipe and DI/DO muffler.
