the y-pipe is where both exhaust pipes dump into one right? dumb question i know. thanks

Y-pipe looks like a Y. Two into one or one into two depending on the direction. You are correct. For instance, you have a V engine so the exhausts out of the cylinders are on two banks. They must join somewhere because you only have one tail pipe.
