Exahust heatshield rattle?

I just bought a 99 f150. Just after 2k rpms there seems to be what sounds like a heatshield rattling. Is it common for the shields on the cat to rattle and make this noise? Thanks

Andrew

There is TSB for this. What you need to do is put one to two worm clamps around each of the cat heat shields and tighten them to 60 lb-in (not very tight really).

PART NUMBER PART NAME

FOTZ-5A231-A Worm clamp (4-1/2" To 9-1/2") $4.65
W705949-S300 Worm clamp (3/4" To 4") $5.93

I suppose a local hardware store also carries them.

What years and engines is this TSB for? Should I look at doing this to my '02 4.6L when the weather gets warmer?

Technically, it's for all 1992-99 Ford, Lincoln & Mercury models but, I'm sure the same theory still applies.

Whats TSB mean? Im about to go and get under my truck and figure out where this is coming from. Its driving me nuts. I tried once prodding at the cat shields, but I was all dressed up and didnt feel like getting dirty so I stopped. Hopefully Ill find it today. Thanks

Cool Sweet!

Excellent, I found the culprit in about 10 minutes. A small shield on the y-pipe had a broken weld on the very end. Used a little brute force and bent that sucker away from the pipe about an inch... well. no more rattle! Hell yeah, I love it when you fix something the first try and it isnt even hard at all!

???

What exactly is a worm clamp? Could you describe it and where it goes? I have just recently heard a rattling and i think it is one of the shields.
