V-10 owners

I am thinking of replacing an Expedition and Screw with an Excursion. We only drive around 10k miles per year and 98% is short trips around town. I like the Expy but we purchased it with the center row captain chairs and have to keep the rear seat up all the time now. Need more room (3 boys) and a GM product is not in my future.

Now to the questions:
1) How much worse is your MPG than our Expy's 11 mpg average. All city driving.
2) Any problems with the V-10? I think I heard a piston slap sound when I started my Screw with 5.4L this AM.
3) Would you purchase another one if you had to do it again?

Keep in mind that my V10 is in an F250 and not an Excursion, I will give you what my answers would be:

1) Geez - you are only getting 11mpg in your Expy? I was getting about 14.5mpg in my '00 SD with the 5.4. Would have thought that the Expy would be better. Anyway, as it stands now, I get about 12.3mpg (on average) in mostly city/rush hour hwy driving [and my rush hour hwy driving is typically stop and go, always under 40mph].

2) 6 months and almost 13K miles after purchase and not a problem yet. I have seen other owners report several years of trouble free service so far.

3) Yes, I would purchase the V10 again. [If this one was about buying the V10 and not the Excursion.]

1) I got slightly better gas mileage then that with my V10 excursion when it was stock!
2) I have not had any problems with mine. I don't drive it a great deal and only have 6k on it. It does have several performance mods. Supercharger, chip, headers, tranny kit, 4.56 gears.
3) I have no problems with the V10. But if I had it to do over again
I would have gone with the diesel. Only because you can get much larger RWHP and Torque numbers with fewer modifications.

We own both. My wife drives a 5.4L Expedition 4wd all short trips. 10.5 mpg, on highway up to 16 mpg. Put on about 8k per year. I drive a V10 4wd Excursion with 3.73LS gears. Put on about 20K a year. Use as daily commute on surface streets all stop and go. Get 10 - 11 mpg. Most miles put on weekends, on highway about 75 mph get 14 mpg calculated. slightly lower in winter.

Personally, I like the Excursion better. The V10 has no vibration like the 5.4L does at idle and has plenty of power. The Excursion does not wallow like the Expedition, but I have modified the suspension on it while the Expedition remains stock. Overall the Excursion feels tighter than the Expedition.

Ahhhh - we both know the REAL reason you would go with the PSD is so Mach1 wouldn't make fun of you any more!

JDMnr,

I said if I had it to do over again I would get the diesel for the reason I gave. It was not based on idiotic percentages and tired 'why diesels are better' one liners. I'm certainly not motivated by what mach1 or anyone else thinks of Me or MY TRUCK. I'm not hardly ashamed of my truck. And I don't pass judgment on other peoples.

mrottndog,

I was just pulling your chain a little bit. I too have taken exception with some of the other unsubstantiated posts on here about what makes a "real truck", etc. Like you, I am also very satisfied with my rig [even if it is a gasser (and a minority in the SD sales column)], and could care less what anyone else has to say negative about it. Like I said in one of my other posts, you have a very nice rig, and if I offended you with my last post, my humblest apologies.

Jeff

No offense taken at all!
I usually try not to get sucked into these gasser/diesel debates and I am probably reacting quicker than I normally would.

My gasser also suits me. It is not my primary transportation and is my fun truck! I get terrible gas mileage and I don't care. I expected that. The mods done on my truck thus far were not intended to improve gas mileage. I bought the truck new almost 2 years ago and have less than 6k on it. As far as the engine lasting for 300k... Either me are the truck will be gone before the V10 reaches it's life expectancy.

I've seen pics of your very nice superduty and know you and I frequent some of the same ford truck sites. I am sorry if my last post seemed like I was snapping at you.

we get 13 city and on a recent trip we averaged 14.9 and drove through the mountins in arkansas and also set idleing at times. pretty good i think for the big suv. I am a big fan of the v10. Drove an 02 with the diesel and did not like the off the line acell.
