New to the diesel world!
Hello, fellow Excursion members i want to ask you guys a couple of questions, im new to the desel world and im looking to get an awsome ford excursion limited! I dont know what the pros, cons of the bahemiths sized trucks are.
:coffee: My first truck is Ford expedition and i still do have it but looking around i heard the expo waste more fuel then an excursion.(true/false) and also what engine is best? im thinking about getting the 6.0L becuase of the 5 speed transmission on the 03-05 but its more of throwing a rock and hitting which ever it lands on.Do the diesel engine require less mantinance?(true/false) im still very young and i wont have much money for mantinance(i will for tire, brakes, ect) Im not going to be hualing so much (if any) just more of daily driver-I dont rally care about the diesel, i like driving big!!! Lastly, is the limited the top of the line model? i like my trucks to be fully loaded not XLT or XLS(no offence to anyone). p.s. is there anything i should look for? like i know to look for leaks and such but like anyother things? i dont want to get a LEMON Thanks for answering my question, always have been an excursion fan i guess  that mean im have to change my user name  |
dont get a 6.0. diesels require more maintenance, if your set on an excursion ..get a 6.8 v10 if your not going to haul anything
|
Well i know that the first 00-02 6.0 had problem but i was talking about 04 or 05 , there a reason why it replaced the 7.3 right? and the v10 ok but man gas? 12.mpg? i wish ford put a 5 speed on that then maby it would be better!
im also be traveling alot from LV to Denver or Georgia so pretty long distance! |
the 6.0 was made from 03-07??
no matter which excursion you get, your not going to get "good" gas mileage. if your set on a diesel, get a 7.3 |
If you are going to buy a 6.0 get your writing hand warmed up and get a couple extra boxes of checks. They are expensive to maintain and fix when they break and the best milage I have seen out of my truck is 15 on the highway and I have only seen that once other than that I am seeing 13-14 on the highway.

ok then, i will try t0 get the 7.3 i really dont want a gas, i like the feel of a diesel
also how hard are they to change regualer maint.? like glow plugs and such? |
i know to put a set of injectors is pretty damn expensive, and a PITA to do. glow plugs..im not really sure, but it cant be cheat..
pretty much anything you do on a diesel is gonna be expensive |
I am not trying to be an ass but I have owned my truck for two years and nothing about owning any diesel truck is cheap. When they break they are expensive to fix no matter what make it is.
|
alot of people dont, they think they are just like a normal gas engine, till they dont change a fuel filter when they are suppose to, or when it goes to a shop and cost 3 times as much as a normal gas engine.

Injectors aren't cheap, but they're easy to change, not a PITA. Glow plugs are just as hard as injectors to change. Maintenance on a diesel is expensive.
|
ok, thanks for the advice and yes i work on my own vehicle and i have changed plugs & coil on my expo (PAIN!) but dam i guess i will stick to the expys or a navigator. BUT i might sacrifice all that just for the Excursion i love those trucks!!!
@f150fella08-Why would you replace fuel Injectors? i never replaced them on my expo. |
For some reason the dont last or they get starved for fuel by a plugged filter or running the truck low on fuel. I know the 6.0 has a taste for injectors for some reason and at 250 a pop plus labor to change them is expensive. I changed two in my truck last fall and it was 1300 and then two weeks later the FICM (fuel injection control module) took a dump at 800 to replace it. If you really want a diesel go buy one but just be ready to reach deep to fix it.
|
so in other word keep it full of fuel and change the fuel filter every 2 years or so? i only changed it on my expo once but it a pain on the 4WD models there nothing like the 2WD on the underside!!!
sorry for asking but why not do it your self? or are they that hard? |
You need to change the fuel filters on a diesel every 15k-20k and you are supposed to follow the same service interval on gas motors but most people dont. I change the filters on my truck 3-4 times a year.
