Are you talking about the Gas V8 or the Diesel?

The Diesel is the hands down choice if you are going to be keeping the vehicle for a few years. The pictures of the brown Excursion that I have posted a few topics down from this is a V10 with 4.30 gears. It was getting 8-10 around the city bone stock. As it sits in the picute we added taller tires, an aftermarket mass air sensor, throttle body spacer, custom air intake, flowmaster cat back, and a custom Superchip. It now is getting between 11-13 (depending if she is driving or her husband )

In contrast we did a Diesel 4X4 a few weeks ago. I don't remember what the before mileage was before but after a Superchip and custom 4" exhaust it was getting a cool 21mpg no matter how or where you drove it.

Hope this helps.

Question V8 or V10

What's the better engine when considering acceleration, mileage and maintenance. I'm currently looking into one for my spouse (many children to haul around), and no that gas mileage will not be the best however, with rising gas prices it is a consideration.

Go for the Powerstroke!

Why? Better fuel mileage (my wife is getting about 15 mpg (U.S.) with her 4x4). It's still nice & quiet in the cab (once it warms up), it'll last far longer than the v8 or v10, and will have better re-sale down the road. Plus, that diesel purr really grows on you.

The diesel has a better warranty as well. Here in Canada, the gas engines have a 60k km warranty, the powerstroke is 150k km. Dunno what it is in the U.S.

Plus, if you ever need to pull a trailer, you'll be happy you have the diesel.

On the down side, it's a pricey option, oil changes are more expensive, and your neighbors will love you when you fire it up at 5 a.m. on really cold mornings, unless you plug it in the night before.

The V8 would be a better choice with all of the considerations you listed...acceleration might not be outstanding though.

If you need to tow frequently, then a bigger engine would be needed.

Fuel costs in the Excursion are a major consideration. Co-worker of mine just bought a new one..and he has been telling me how he spent $55.00 the other day to fill it up. OUCH!

Cool

Opt for the V-10. Gets about 1 mpg less than the V-8, from what I have read on other boards giving milage numbers on the V-8.

The V-10 had loads of acceleration (important when passing)and just purs at 70 mph running around 2000 rpm. I'm getting 12 city, 15 hwy with a heavy foot. It gets 10.5 or so towing a 8X10 Pace trailer.

However, if you are going to keep it a long time, and tow very often, by all means, get the PSD. That engine pulls and pulls, and delivers about 3 mpg better milage (almost a wash right now, though, given the high diesel prices). Also, bear in mind that the diesel is expensive to maintain, using 16 quarts of oil every oil changes (and diesel oil ain't cheap), expensive fuel filters, and requires an additive to the cooling system every 15K. Also, it does not have the zip that the gasser does, but it will tow!

Cool

I'd go with the v-10. Lots of power, and the gas mileage is very similar to that of the v-8. If you'll be towing at all, you might want the diesel. Consider this, a gas engine has a life expectancy of 150,000 miles. While a deisel is extected to get 300,000 miles. So, for $4,600 extra, you get another 150,000 miles out of your truck, as well as better gas mileage.

Another thought, diesel is around $2.25 a gallon by me, while premium is around $1.55. That's about 75cents a gallon difference. Pretty poor since diesel is cheaper to produce than gasoline.

I have a 5.4 in a 2000 excursion and I like it. It gets about 15.4 mpg on highway and appx. 12 mpg in town and it does not seem under powered. We took it on a trip pulling a snowmobile 3 place snowmobil trailer and it pull it 80 to 85 mph no problem.

Yeah, diesel is much cheaper to refine than gasoline. The problem lies in the refineries' choosing to produce more home heating oil than diesel - thus driving down the supply of diesel. Home heating oil and diesel are pretty similar. But now that its warmed up here in the Northeast, diesel prices have fallen substantially ($.60 in a day) finally!
