Question mystery message

Just picked up my new (to me) '99 XLT. All's well, great truck. One puzzlement: The little red message in the upper center of the instrument panel that flashes, whenever the vehicle is shut off, "THEFT... THEFT... THEFT..." The truck has no theft-alarm system so far as I know. This is beginning to drive me nuts... nuts... nuts... Anyone able to enlighten me?

It's covered in the manual. If you didn't get a manual with it, you can download it at fordvehicles.com.

Basically, your vehicle does have an anti-theft system even though you don't have an alarm. It is the coded key setup.

Welcome! Jody and CS

CS is right...its called the "PATS" system.

Same thing happened to me and i had the book.

Also...if you have a simple duplicate key made..it want start the engine...has to be a chipped key and programmed for your PATS system...i think thats also in the handbook.

Good luck...OT

Thanks to you both!

Indeed, I don't have a manual; it's on order.

Appreciate the info.
