Post Different Turn Signals

Well my left turn signal just went. To me it was weird. I'm used to when a bulb goes out, the indicator on the dash lights solid. On this truck it flashed really fast making first think it was the relay. Even when I pulled the bulb it still looked good, no breaks at all in the filaments.

I have a similar problem. I have noticed though that is related to a connection in the tilt wheel because if I put a turn signal on and tilt the wheel I can make it start or stop itself. Since so many are having this problem, isn't this a safety issue? I have a 1997 Expy. built in summer of 1996. Only has 40K on it. Iassume you have a tilt wheel. trying turning the lights/ turn signals on and holt the tilt level out and move the steering wheel up and down. The lights should follow off and on if this is similar to my problem? If it is I'm not sure what the fix is. Mine is getting worse. I have to search for a tilt position where the signals will function. A dealer fix is going to be expensive

when that is flashing fast. check to see what light is not working. then there is your prob. if light in dash is flashing then the front should be. or bad bulb or wireing. those bulbs will look ok but be bad. trust me. not like good old day's when you could look at it and see that is was no good. now if front is working and back is not. try stepping on brake's. if no light, bulb is bad. if brake light is ok. then you have problem at turn sig sw. or the dang ol broken wire at back of sw. good luck.

I have a 1997 F150 and had the same problem with my right blinker. At first I thought it was one of the bulbs going out but they were all working. Then I noticed if I just move the turn signal arm to the point where the blinker starts that it would blink normally. If I locked it into place it would start blinking real fast. This led me to believe that it was the multifunction switch. I took the switch out and opened it up. The contacts had some dried up green goo on them. I sanded the contacts and put some conducting grease on them and put the switch back together. My turn signal now blinks normally again.

Just be very careful with pulling the switch apart since there are serveral springs and parts which need to go back the same way they came apart.

Hope this helps.

I think this is what they might call a "known issue" with our trucks. I have a 97 F150 bought used in 2000 and the control stalk has been doing funky stuff ever since I got it. Among them:

Tapping the end - to run the wipers once - causes the wipers to run and spray fluid as if you're holding the end down constantly
Sometimes the wipers simply come on all by themselves, at a rate (from slowest interval to high speed) of their choosing, with or without fluid spray
Or won't turn off when you rotate the control to the off position
Turn signals "blink fast" like you specify - or, the flasher can be heard clicking fast, but no lights (inside or outside) are blinking
About the only thing that isn't affected is low/high beams. I keep meaning to take the truck in for a new control stalk but finding time to do so is a bit of a pain....

found my problem. may be yours too? took off bottom cover on steering assembly by removing 3 screws. removed bottom cover. next find fourth hole in bottom cover. with cover off you will see a ball bearing lock mechanism on the iginition switch. remove positive battery terminal. put transmission in N and put key position the whole way on (against engage starter position. with key in push on ball bearing with a paper clip or small screwdriver while gently pulling out on key and tumbler. once out remove top steering cover with tilt wheel the whole way down. I got this info. from my local ford service manager. once I removed top cover I noticed that there was such tension on the top switch assembly that it broke the clip, probably last winter when the wires were very cold and contracted. the plug was partially in the socket. I then took a heavy duty rubber band and hooked the plug and connector together and reassembled in reverse order. it worked fine after I reconnected the battery. There is very little space under the cover to do much of anything. replacing the plug would be a nightmare.
