Annoying automatic door locks...
First off... Hi. I just purchased a '97 Eddie Bauer Expedition and this is my first post here.
The only thing that bugs me about my truck (love everything else) is the automatic door locks - put it in drive/reverse and all doors lock....grrrrr. This is annoying - especially combined with the mandatory 2 presses of the unlock button on the remote to open the locked rear doors.
Surely someone has found a way to defeat this "feature" that the boys in Dearborn figured would save countless lives and carjackings...
Thanks!

I recall this from another Thread, where the dealership told a memeber to turn the key on and off 3 times, and hit the unlock botton to stop this.
Don't have my manual handy to check if this is in there ( could be ? ) they really don't bother me too much.

I still have the auto door locks enabled, don't reall care to go through this after each time I reset the computer, and my 95 Ram had the same thing. For the driver and front passenger it does not matter if this is on or off, doors still open with a pull of the handle.
Actually, I do have a kid. She's still in a car seat. This is the issue - everytime I drive with her in the car, I get out, grab the rear door handle and it snaps without opening the door. Then I press the unlock button.... then I press the unlock button and then I get to open the door.
I use the car primarily for work - to and from the office, adults using the rear seat. My wife drives a 2000 Jeep GC that allow us to choose the lock functions.
When the kid(s) gets a bit older, I'll probably want the lock-in feature. Right now, it's a useless annoyance.... to me.
I tried the on-off, on-off, on-off, unlock trick... it didn't work. I also searched my owners manual for this infor... not there. I'm wondering if the '97s didn't have the "option" to deactivate.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Manhattan you have to do the on/off really fast then hit the unlock,
to reset it do the on/off and hit the lock side. Mines a '99 XLT works either way.
Good luck

Try this....
Deactivating/activating the autolock feature
Before following the procedure, make sure that the ignition is OFF and
all vehicle doors and the liftgate window are closed.
You must complete steps 1-7 within 30 seconds or the procedure will
have to be repeated. If the procedure needs to be repeated, you must
wait 30 seconds.
1. Turn the ignition key to ON.
2. Press the power door unlock control three times.
3. Turn the ignition key from ON to OFF.
4. Press the power door unlock control three times.
5. Turn the ignition back to ON. The horn will chirp.
6. Press the unlock control, then press the lock control. The horn will
chirp once if autolock was deactivated or twice (one short and one long
chirp) if autolock was activated.
7. Turn the ignition to OFF. The horn will chirp once to confirm the
procedure is complete.

buschman...
That did it! I tried the on-off, on-off, on-off thing countless times - nothing.
I did the procedure you outlined... once and nailed it! THANKS! I'm keeping a print-out of your instructions in the owners manual... my manual had no mention anywhere of how to deactivate the Lock-in feature.
Thanks!

I never liked the locks locking by themselves.
I keep thinking about this scenerio.
A couple of small kids are in a running car and they put the gear shifter into drive, the car is heading for a river and you are desperately trying to get into the car to apply the brakes but cannot because the door is locked.
Years ago befor autolocks came out we had a couple of small children drown from their car going into a river. It's possible

This may be in left field, and may not apply to Fords. Back in 97 I had a Ford F150 and my wife at the time (divorced now) had a 97 Grand Am. Her Grand Am had that auto lock feature you are all talking about. With her car all I had to do was pull a fuse so they wouldn't (auto lock) Is that possible with the Fords?
The only reason I bring that up is someone outlined a great procedure for bypassing the auto lock but if you lose power would you have to re-do the procedure? If so and their is actually a fuse you could pull then you wouldn't have to worry about it.
As I said I only bring it up because I don't know if Ford is that way. I have an 01 F150 don't have the auto lock so I don't know if there would or would not be a fuse you could pull.
Divorced now because she didn't like Fords
(see ya) lol

Autolock status (on or off) is stored in non-volatile memory so it does not change when power is lost. The only time you would need to re-program it is if you replace your Central Security Module.
I think they do that as a safety thing. I personally wouldn't want all four doors and my lid to unlock when all I need is the drivers door.....especially at night when I am alone in a dark parking garage.....think about it, but you guys don't think about stuff like that though. Guess I am just a little paranoid.
Like they said, it's in the owner's manual. It a rather convoluted procedure, involving more than just turning the key three times. Something like "scratch you ear, say your mother's maided name four times, cross yourself, turn the key three times, hit horn, repeat ..."
Or something like that.
