Question 97 F150 - power windows work w/o key?

Is it normal for the power windows to work without the key in the ignition? This seems odd, and no other vehicle I have owned has done this. 97 F150 XLT regcab 2wd....

Thumbs up This is a good thing...

There is a timer that allows them to work for a limited time.
Unless the door is opened.

From what I know from experience, my windows are movable for a few minutes after you shut the engine off, as long as you don't open the door. So, yours work regardless of when you try it?,,,,98

No, I don't think so. Unless he really has an XL.

Then it would make sense.

Hmm, I noticed it when parking the truck and accidentally hitting the window switch instead of the door lock switch on the way out... If there is a timer, that is cool, I'll have to experiment with that. Thanks, this group always has the answers.......

By pass the relay

On all my cars with power windows I read the wiring diagram and bypass the relay with a jumper or I remove the relay all together so i can use windows without key. Doesnt help your problem i guess, if it is a problem? Just though I would mention that.

No, I don't think it is a problem, I was more concerned with a security risk. If the power windows work all the time, it could be easy to break in with a coat hanger (simply push on the button to lower the window). The way it works seems to make sense... The windows will work for a while after the ignition is turned off, but this is overridden as soon as the door is opened.
