Question Keyless Entry w/ Engine ON???

The other day I locked my keys in my truck with the engine running. Luckily I was at home so I got my other set but my keyless entry would not work, and I know there is nothing wrong with it. Does keyless entry not work when a key is in the ignition? Also, my doors automatically lock when the truck is put in Drive, but sometimes (especially when the engine is cold) I have to drive a mile or so before the doors will lock. WTF?

I don't know about the F150 for sure(mine has aftermarket keyless entry), but a friend has a F250 with factory keyless. he locked his truck while running to go into a convenience store and could not get back in with his remote entry keyfob.
dealer said this was a "safety feature". I don't know how this could be considered a safety feature, but that is normal operation for the keyless entry.

For 2002.5MY or older F150s, the fobs will not work with the ignition in RUN. For 2002.5MY+ they will. This is in your Owner's Manual.

The breakpoint for F250/350 was 2002MY. Before that point the fobs did not work with ignition in RUN.

As far as Autolock is considered, for your 2001 F150 you need to do the following for them to lock:
1) Ignition in RUN
2) All doors closed
3) Shift through Reverse
4) Release the brake pedal

If you release the pedal too soon it will not Autolock until you press and release the pedal a second time, hence the 'delayed locking' you are seeing.

Swampview,

I was referring to the keyless entry that is on your keychain, not the keypad that is on the door itself ( I do not have this option).

You are driving down the road, without your seatbelt but, figure you are safe because your doors lock automatically.

Your wife wants to kill you.
She pulls up beside you, hits her FOB then bumps you off a cliff.
You fall out of the unlocked door and die a horrible death.
The dealer says, "I told you so.".
