Remote starters
I have a Sidewinder 6500 ESP remote start system on my '98. You also need to by a PATS (Passive Anti-theft System) bypass module. This module disables the factory system in order to use the aftermarket equipment. My alarm transmitter starts my truck, locks my doors, provides illuminated entry, rolls down my windows, and arms the truck. I don't carry my factory fob. Sidewinder is the same company as Viper. Best Buy carries remote start systems from Clifford. You can try them and Circuit City.
Remote starters are best left to professionals. I probably could have installed it myself, but chose to let Best Buy install it. As it was, it took them half a day. That translates into 2 days for me. If you know how to install a normal alarm you could probably fake your way through a remote starter.
I had a Viper 5200 series remote starter installed by a pro, it still gave them problems, they had to call techs on the west cost.
It was worth the money to have it done right, I love it. I did my
key pad install myself, but after watching them do the start install
I am very glad I did not try.Check out the Viper site, lots of models
to pick from. Good Luck

sg171a,
I'm not sure installing a remote starter on your truck must be left to a pro. Take your time, check twice and do it yourself if you feel you can, you can look back and know its done right. Check out 12voltdirect.com, they have great units at a reasonable price. I have bought a few from them and they always send you the wiring diagram for your truck if you request it. I have put at least 5 units in Fords and all went well. The longest was my own SuperCrew, that took at least 8 hours...just be prepared and have at it....solder all your conections and only cut a wire after you have double checked. I'm not knocking anyone on the boards, I just think, if you want to do it yourself.....go for it.

All mods listed below were self installed...and I'm no rocket scientist.

I installed a Bulldog stater/keyless entry on my 93 Tbird and it did take 2 days. I was lucky when I purchased my HD because the previous owner had one already installed. I am not sure of the brand but the range sucks, <500 feet. The kit I installed in my Tbird was good to about 1000 feet. Since I park on the far end of the parking lot at work (to avoid door dings) the extra range is a must.
I've installed 3 into Fords, the last being my 98 truck. Bought it on-line from www.12voltshop.com and their on-line help was great. I've posted extensively here and on the aftermarket boards about it. I highly recommend them. The hardest part was sneaking the wires through the kick panel into the door for the lock/unlock function and also finding the tach wire in a really thick harness. Give it a shot if you are mechanically inclined. But on the other side, I am having one professionally installed in my Brides Durango this Friday AM. It's too friggin' cold to do it here! Good luck,
