My 1996 Explorer Sport dome and cargo light eventually goes off but it stays on way to long. I have tested all door switches and they are functioning properly.
when I open a door, the dome and cargo light come on and does go off eventually. It stays on way to long though.
Any suggestions?

 

Define "way too long" as in how many seconds or minutes (precisely).

 

I did a time test to determine exactly how long the dome light remains on with the engine off. And entering the vehicle first thing in the am.
after sitting all night, I opened the driver door and dome came on and did so wit all other doors.
however, each door when opened and then shut, (engine off) the dome light stays on approx 40 min unless the vehicle is started and driven. Then the dome light shuts off about a minute after moving forward on road.

 

Any suggestions??

 

Are you sure you don't have the switches on the dome in the wrong position or messed up?

I used to have this problem when I used to drive E-350's a lot. On one of them, I had to drive 400+ miles in the middle of the night with the dome lights on because someone broke the switch on the dome light. Not fun!

 

I can understand what your saying. The Dome light switches are functioning properly. It’s only when the engine is of, for example, when I go to the vehicle and open any door the dome light comes on. When I close the door without entering the vehicle the dome light remains on for approx 45 min. However if I enter the vehicle and drive, the light goes off within 30 seconds. If I just sit in the vehicle after starting the engine and not move or drive the vehicle, the dome remains on for 45 min
