Angry First Problem In A Long Time....

Trucks been running great for a long time, but the other day i got the dreaded "phantom wipe". I know Ive read about this before but I dont think anyone has explained how to fix it. Im sure its just the switch. Has anyone out there fixed it themselves?? In the beginning, it was only like one wipe a day, but now its doing it like 5-10 times a day.

Cool PHANTOM WIPES

This problem shows up a lot on the Rangers, (www.fordranger.com) looks like its spreading to the F-150's now.
Yes the multifunction switch is the problem, unless you know someone that will sell the "wiper only" part of the switch.

This is a very common problem. I have it myself. From time to time the wipers turn on by themselves as I turn a corner and sometimes I cannot get the washer fluid to come out. Although I cannot confirm because I havn't tried to fx it, I suspect there are poor elect. connections due to a flawed design.

If you can get the switch apart it may be as simple as cleaning the contacts but if you'd prefer a new Multi-Funtion switch, they're only about $55.00.

WIPER PROBLEM

One other thing I forgot to mention. Ford has a recall for this wiper system. Seems the gear part of the motor/trans has a problem. Not sure of the exact dates, there is another posting in the electrical part of this board that gives the dates.
You might want to have yours checked. I have found a few at work.

My 99 Expedition was recalled, not really a recall, but an 'owner satisfaction program', last summer, summer of 2000. Though I had never seen the phamthom wipe, they replaced the wiper switch. I still haven't seen any sign of this problem. You might check with your dealer, bet they will replace the switch for you.
