Today the battery light came on. Got home put a volt meter on the battery with it running and it was charging around 12v. Took the cables off and cleaned them up and took for a drive(had to get kid to football practice). While driving with RPM's up I get around 14v and then at idle I get 12v and under? I think its the battery what do you all think?

 

Go to a parts store and get them both load tested in the parking lot.

 

That sounds about right. The alternator should be ok. Did the Batt light go off after you cleaned the terminals? If so then all is probably good. But GLC is right, an auto parts place will check it for free.
