Question OBD Data Link Location

I guess I've got a couple of questions....................

I have a Actron Code Scanner that I've used on other Ford vehicles. Is there a location where this type of scanner can be plugged in? It does not appear to fit into the port under the dash board.

Suddenly, my 4.6 powered pickem-up-truck acted as if she was running a few cylinders short. I pulled and replaced the plugs, fuel filter, wires, and coil packs.

Same problem...any ideas?

Thanks!

Question

Well, unless you have the "Check Engine" light on, I don't think you'll find any codes, even if you find the right connectior. I have not tried mine, but I thought it was the connector under the dash, next to where the floor heater register is.

Maybe you got a bad batch of gas? Vaccum leak? Have you tried to reset the computer? Just a couple of guesses.

if the scanner you have works in the mustang, it's wrong for the truck. the port is in front of the driver's knee & my actron fits it fine.

In about '96, almost all car manufacturers switched to a standard diagnostics interface called OBD-II. So, although the scanner will work on your 92 Mustang, it won't work on your truck.

I bought an OBD-II scanner from obd-2.com for a good price. It works great on my '98 F-150, but won't work on my 92 Sable.

Kelly is right

By the model year 1996 the government mandated that all cars must use OBD II and a standard type connector. Your 92 has a simpilar version called OBD I. OBD II is a lot more sophisticated, and thus requires a newer type tester. Actron (and others) make an OBD II tester for about $100-$170 just depending on where you buy it. It's a little expensive but the good news is that it should test any vehicle ( Ford, GM, Chysler, imports) you want between the 96-2001 model years. One side note on the cheaper OBD II testers is that most test for "generic" codes only. Meaning that it will only test for the codes that all the same for every vehicle and not the vehicle specific codes ( or the codes that only Ford uses). If you want to learn more here is a good website to start at www.obdii.com
