2007 F150 Alternator Problem
2007 F150 Alternator Problem
I have a 2007 F150 with the 5.4L and have been having a recurring problem the last year. My truck is eating alternators, I have gone through now 6 of them. It has been burning out the voltage regulators and the mechanic can't find a problem, I asked some other mechanics and they gave me a possible solution which was to run a new ground. Unfortunately that did not work. Has anyone come across this problem and fixed it or have insight what it could be?
Few questions.
1. Can you post some info on your truck or complete your profile
- Engine, trim level, etc.
2. The replacement alternators, where are you getting them from ?
- Are they new or rebuilds ?
3. Are there any modifications to the truck ?
- Stereo system, lights, plow, winch, etc.
4. When was the last time you replaced and had a real load test done on the battery ?
5. Have you checked the cables for damage ?
- This is specific to the terminal end or just inside the terminal end.

2007 Ford F-150 XTL Supercab White with the 5.4L 3valve V8 Triton 96,000 Miles, Tow Package
Stock Vehicle, no modifications except a new ground wire from battery to alternator (Was an earlier attempt to rectify the problem which from another mechanic that I am friends with said his 89 Bronco had the same issue)
Mechanic was using refurbished I believe from NAPA
Mechanic ran load test on the battery, both the one I bought new last year and the one I just put in recently is brand new. Mechanic also ran a series of tests because this was the 6th time it has crapped on the alternator. It appears to be approximately every 3000 miles it goes bad or 3 to 4 months, which ever occurs first.

I had this same problem in my '04, finally asked a very reputable alternator/electrical shop and they told me it was the connector on the back of the alternator. He said that over time the pin connections get loose or broken and don't make good contact. Seemed too simple to be my problem but I bought a new connector/pigtail from him for $10 and i haven't had any more issues since. He said that when a Ford truck comes in his shop for a charging issue, it doesn't leave without a new connector on the alternator!
