Blower Resistor Trouble

I got a new blower resistor. Upon replacement, the burning electrical smell started seconds after trial use. I removed the part again to check more closely for corrosion at the connector terminals. None found. The resistor coils glow orange on all settings except the high (bypass). I know that electrical resistance produces heat, but this seems like way too much.

I think that the current condition will simply reproduce the last condition, which was failure of all speeds except the high bypass.

What should I check next?
